Title: Some good thoughts needed
Post by: paris on July 20, 2009, 10:40:29 AM
My 7yr old grandson, Zeke, has had stomach problems since he was a baby. Always throwing up. He has been on every prescription made.  Then they decided it was "stress". He throws up several times a week.  He even was sick standing in line at Disney World a few weeks ago.  No signs of sickness -- just suddenly throws up.  Now, on Thursday, they are doing an upper GI.  One possibility is "abdominal migraines". Another is a "kink" in his intestines.  They have also scheduled an appt with a neurologist to look at his nervous system.  He gets sick at school, in the middle of the night, stress, no stress---there doesn't seem to be any one specific trigger.  Ezekiel is such a sweet loving kid. He and I are extremely close. (that is his picture on my facebook).  I will go with them to the hospital on Thursday.  I would rather be there than wait at home.   So, some good thoughts for one of the sweetest little boys ever would be very appreciated    :grouphug;

Paris,
One of my students has abdominal migraines and his vomiting tends to come in batches. Out of the blue.

BUT, they have been able to narrow it down to some specific food sensitivities that are fairly easy to control.

My thoughts are with you and Zeke. It is always hard on children when they don't understand what is causing their troubles.

Your words were just what I needed----thank you all.  Rerun, please start those prayers!  Thank you  :cuddle;    He has been dealing with this since birth, so now, he just throws up like it is no big deal.  They have gone through the food allergy process, the presription anti acid route.  I have been doing tons of research (of course!) but my daughter hasn't. I like to know what to expect and be ready to ask questions.  Although she works with extremely ill people everyday, this is her little boy and that is different.   He is coming over to "play" tonight.   :2thumbsup;  He knows he is going to the hospital and that he will drink a milkshake.  HA!  He might throw it at them when he starts to drink it. This could be very ugly!!!  LOL  But, for tonight, we will watch America's Got Talent and cuddle for awhile.    :2thumbsup;

Zeke did amazing today.  He was nervous during the check in part. I had given him new Star Wars cards, so we were playing with them while Mom did the paperwork stuff.  Then we went to radiology and he was a real trooper.  He asked me lots of questions.  He had asked his Mom all of them already, but I think he needed to hear Nana agree with Mom!  He drank the barium and then watched the pictures of its progress.  He thought that was cool.  Then we went to ChickFilet for lunch. He hadn't eaten a bite since dinner the night before.  After filling his tummy, we went to my house and played Star Wars card games.    :2thumbsup;   The radiologist said things looked good anatomically, no kinks, etc.  Next appointment is with the neurologist.  He is so tired of throwing up, I think he will go to any doctor right now to find out what is going on.  Thank you for all your good wishes.  I needed a place to worry about him that didn't involve relatives!  I can always count on all of you.   :cuddle;

Friday he sees the neurologist.  At least he doesn't have to drink Barium for that!   We played Star Wars cards again last night.  Best $5 I have ever spent.   Now I need to find something for the next appt!   Thanks for your good thoughts.   :cuddle;

His neurologist appt is tomorrow at 8.  Not sure what they will do.  He has another appointment next week, but I can't remember what specialist that is.  Thanks for all your good wishes.  I told Zeke that lots of people were thinking about him.   We don't talk about it in front of him, so this is my safe place to go to with my worries.  Thanks, friends    :cuddle;

One more appointment out of the way.  We liked the doctor and Zeke did well at the appt.  There are a couple of explanations. One being the abdominal migraines.  He is giving him a med to start today and take daily to see if it makes any difference.  Another thing could be a cyst in the brain. So, Monday Zeke will have an MRI to see how the brain looks.   We took him to school after the appt. and walked him to his class.  Then, two hours later, Melissa got a call that he had thrown up.  Poor kid. This has to be wearing him out.  Today, his surprise was a checkers set so we could play while Mommy did the paperwork.  I am going to run out of ideas for surprises if they don't figure this out soon!   Thanks, once more for giving me a place to come to.  Melissa called me a little while ago and simply said " I am worried".  Nothing like a Mother's worry. (or Nana's)

paris, I pray that the medication will help Zeke. You know that Len goes through just about the same thing. I have found that Popsicles really seem to help and the doctors can't explain it. Constant throwing up really screws with the body as a whole and with the heat we have been having dehydration is a real concern. Please keep us updated and I hope you have a quiet weekend.  :cuddle;

Oh Paris I am just now getting to read this. I am so sorry to hear.  I hope they figure out what is wrong and get it under control . Let us know how the meds are working.

When I was little I used to throw up like that.  No one ever thought anything of it. I still do now when I get really nervous but I can control it much better now then I could at age 8.   Everyone always thought I made myself do it cause I was mad or something. Matthew still believes that. And it isn't, it just happens.  It is just how my body deals with stuff.  But I do hope they find out what is it for him soon.  Throwing up has to be one of the worst feelings in the world.  Poor baby.....I am with you mommy and Nana worries are never fun.  :cuddle; :cuddle;

My little guy is such a trooper!  He did so well with the MRI.  The tech said he was the best and was the stillest kid they have had.  Zeke said afterwards that it felt like he had a nice massage!!  Now we wait for the results.  I really believe there is nothing going on with the brain, but they have to rule it out.  (please let me be right!)   We seem to spend a lot of time waiting for results.   Thanks for all your good thoughts.  I appreciate all of you so much.   :cuddle;

 :bandance;     :bandance;     :bandance;   The MRI of Zeke's brain came back clear!!   :yahoo;  Nothing but brains in there!!    :clap;     My daughter was so excited when she called.    Thank you, thank you, thank you   :yahoo;    Today he had labs drawn.  The nurse kept telling him not to look.  He said he wanted to watch the needle.  Finally, his Mom said "he knows what he can handle". So Zeke told the nurse he would count to 3 and then she could stick him!  He had 7 vials drawn and watched the whole thing.  I know lots of adults that don't like to look, let alone a 7 year old.  He is an amazing little guy and dealing with all the tests very well.  What a week this has been!   Thanks for all your good thoughts.    :grouphug;

He IS a trooper! Yes, there are so many adults who couldn't handle what he is doing!

Now let's get to the bottom of this! It's time for the medical profession to figure out what is going on!  :2thumbsup;

Thinking of you and your family!

Zeke is still being "evaluated".  The medicine for abdominal headaches doesn't seem to make any difference.  He and his sister, Paxton-6, spent the day with me yesterday. They are in year round school and are tracked out for three weeks.   Twice during the day, he threw up.  Just in the middle of playing and he is off to the bathroom.  And then back to whatever he was doing.   We did have a nice day together.  He loves to play board games and cards, so we played everything we could think off.   Paxton drew lots of pictures. One was a detailed one of me with brown and gray hair!  I said "I thought I had light brown hair".  She said, "no, Nana, brown and gray"  Where is my Miss Clarol??     :rofl;   Thanks for you good thougths for my sweet Zeke

I know they have probably ruled this out long ago, but I mention it because my hubby was being treated for an undiagnosed stomach ailment for years - they thought maybe an ulcer - but didn't quite fit.They finally determined it was a bacteria. "As many as 80% of ulcers are associated with Helicobacter pylori, a spiral-shaped bacterium that lives in the acidic environment of the stomach, however only 20% of those cases go to a doctor." After antibiotic treatment he was good as new (after years of them telling him it was diet, stress, acid, blah blah blah.)

I pray Zeke can get some comfort soon, he sounds like such a treasure!  :cuddle;

Thanks Okarol, I will pass this on to Melissa.  It is worth looking into.  I haven't heard of it before, but your husband got the same answers Zeke is getting --stress, acid.  Maybe this is it.  I am going to email Melissa right now.   :cuddle;

Today was another visit with the neurologist.  Zeke has now started having full blown panic attacts.  All tests, labs, etc, say there is nothing physically wrong.  Now he is addressing the anxiety. The first med for abdominal migranes hasn't made a difference.  Dr. is adding a new med. It will take 6-8 weeks to show if it is working.  He is also suggesting a child psycologist so Zeke can learn some coping skills.  I think his Mom is glad that something is being done and maybe Zeke will start feeling better.   We just keep moving forward.    :thumbup;
