LUFKIN—The state of Texas plans to seek the death penalty for former Lufkin DaVita Dialysis nurse, Kimberly Saenz.
Saenz is accused of injecting five patients with bleach at the Lufkin dialysis clinic. The prosecution announced their plans during a pre-trial hearing Wednesday. Saenz is charged with five counts of capital murder and five charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. The indictment alleges that she injected 10 patients with bleach last year, killing five of them.

Ms. Saenz has pleaded not guilty.
So it's up to prosecutors to figure out a motive.
Let's all protect ourselves as best we can:
Whenever anyone injects anything into your dialysate lines, make sure you ask him what they are injecting. And tell the staff you want to be awakened whenever they put anything into the lines. Don't sleep through the procedure! With a staff member like Ms. Saenz, you might never wake up again.

If they prove that she has done it, then she deserves what she's got comming.
Surprised that there are not more executions going on to save states money. My morbid sense of humor.
-
wow, that is really scary. This should make a lot of patients stay awake during dialysis.
-
I had a new nurse on Friday (he's been with Davita 20 years but new in my center). He worked with this woman once and said she was a little goofy. Be nice to your nurses and techs everyone.

It will be interesting to see if information about the unit beyond those five patients comes out.
Lufkin TX DaVita unit problems preceded employment of arrested nurse (http://www.billpeckham.com/from_the_sharp_end_of_the/2008/07/lufkin-tx-davit.html)
Saenz started in August or September of 2007, well after the DaVita unit first started experiencing distressing outcomes (http://www.billpeckham.com/from_the_sharp_end_of_the/2008/07/a-number-in-a-c.html).
State of Texas May 2008 survey of Lufkin DaVita unit is online (http://www.billpeckham.com/from_the_sharp_end_of_the/2008/07/state-of-texas.html)
The Lufkin Daily News has the complete May 2008 survey (http://www.lufkindailynews.com/news/content/includes/0708davita.html") of the Lufkin DaVita dialysis unit ...
The survey makes clear that there were problems at the DaVita Lufkin unit for years. It doesn't mean Saenz is innocent but it does mean there was more going on then one rouge nurse.

There was a syringe hanging off my heparin line that was not labeled and neither tech put it there. I had them throw away the lines and dialyzor everything. You just never know.
What if they put the bleach in the lines before you even get there? If they want to get you it is not that hard!
They should start "second home" dialysis. I have a friend who has a machine at home. I could use it on her off days. That way all the crap would be at her house. Medicare would pay her.

That's a bloody brilliant idea rerun. Has anyone seriously looked into it? It would save having to go to the centre - and be so much nicer. I wonder if it would be workable. What do people think who do home haemo?
-
Seems like it would work well in rural areas, where the centers are spread really far apart.
-
I don't do home hemo but in center hemo. Before I started when they told me I had to have a partner, I suggested maybe somebody else near me would want to come to my house and do theirs and we could be each other's partners. No comments were made. I still think its a good idea.
