Hi, I am DJ. I have had kidney disease due to diabetes since the mid 1990's I was diagnosed a Type 1 diabetic when I was 17. I got my 1st transplant in 2000. MY DH was my donor. It lasted until BK Virus took it our in 2003. I then went on dialysis. I did PD for a year then got another kidney from a cadaver.
In 2007 I was diagnosed with APL a rare form of leukemia. I had three rounds of heavy duty chemo. I went into remission after the first month & my kidney did great. But I had to follow up with a year of methetrexate. My CR kept rising & the dr. kept lowering the dose but it didn't work. So on Dec 31, 2008 I was told to start thinking about dialysis. I wanted to do PD again but my neph. said he thought my husband & me would be great candidates for home hemodialysis. And that it easier on the heart. I had bad cramping on PD.
I got my fistula in Jan, then started in center hemo on June 7. We start training for home hemo on the 20th of July. My husband has already started to insert my needles then pull them. I'll be glad when we can do it at home.
Just got out of a 3 day hospital stay. My center thought they had my dry weight & was only taking that much off. I couldn't breathe & so we called my neph Sat night. He came in & stayed for the whole 4 hr treament. I had more hemo on Sunday & Monday. Over those 3 days they took off 6 liters of fluid, about 14 lbs! I was shocked there was so much fluid left in me.
I live in Utah, born in Louisville, KY, am an avid reader (hello Kindle!), a Barbie doll collector & doll house maker.
We have 2 cockatiels.
I am looking forward to hearing about the experiences people on the board had have.
peace,
DJ
