Title: Killer headaches after run
Post by: Jill D. on September 29, 2006, 06:16:57 PM
Thought I would pass this on...I was consistently having pounding headaches after my HD run. I mentioned this to many RN's and techs and mostly got "that's interesting..." or "well, it's different for everyone". Finally I mentioned it to one of the most experienced nurses (and my favorite) and she set the temp on the machine lower...at 35.5C. It's been about 3 weeks, and...no headache! I do get cold, but they provide warm blankets and I also bring an extra, so it is worth it!

Glad you found something that works for you. Weird how these things work sometimes isn't it?

I guess unless you're bleeding to death or something, the nurses aren't that interested. In fact, one time, I had I literally had a anuerysm burst in my vistula. The nurses did nothing until they saw a bed full of blood!

You just have to keep pestering them sometimes.

That is interesting.  I would get headaches there for awhile and I just took a Tylenol.  I guess it could have been the temp, but I just took a pill.  Anyway, it hasn't happened for a while.

Now my legs ache.  It feels like I'm trying to stand and touch my toes...you know how that stretches your tendons and it pulls.  That is how it feels when I'm just sitting there.....again I take a Tylenol at the beginning of the run and I can tell my legs ache a little, but not near as much with the pill.

I tried Tylenol during and after my run and it didn't touch the pain. It was a throbbing headache and got worse if I laid down. The nurse said when they set the temp low, the patient's blood vessels constrict. Apparently this is a common protocol for people with high blood pressure to help keep it down. Anyway, thought I would share this tidbit of info in case anyone else had the same problem :)

Thanks, Jill.  High BP is one of the side effects of PKD so my husband may encounter this problem.

I used to get bad headaches after dialysis. It was mostly when I had alot of fluid to take off.
