Marvin went back today for his monthly check-up at the clinic to stay in the home hemo program. All labs are perfect -- even the dreaded phosphorus level that Marvin always struggles with!
Before home hemo (started it 2 years ago), Marvin's phosphous ran in the 9-10 range. After home hemo, he was able to keep it down in the 6 -7 range. Lab work today showed it was 5.6 (and 3.5 to 5.5 is "normal"). We were pleased beyond words. We attribute it to the home hemo.
Also, his kT/v has been great for the last six months! Before home hemo, he struggled to get it above 1.9. Since this past January, it's been running in the 2.2 - 2.3 range. Today, it was 2.51. Last month, the doc decreased Marvin from six days/week to five, and we were worried that his kT/v would drop, but it didn't.
Of course, it's not all home hemo -- watching his diet and avoiding the high phosphorus foods helps, as do all those binders I remind him to take. When the dietician told him today his phosphorus was 5.6, Marvin pointed at me and said, "She's been on phosphorus patrol hot and heavy for the last few months."
