hey everyone, its been a while since ive been on the boards;things have been a bit crazy. so Richie has been throwing up, at least 2 times a day sometimes 3; this has been going on for about 3 weeks maybe a bit longer. So his PCP (who is an idiot) had decided that it was do to allergies, and a post-nasal drip. so friday he ate breakfast and then 20 min later threw up; so im so tired of him dealing with this, and i feel so horrible that this is happening, and worried that hes not getting proper nutrition because of it that i insisted that he get in to see a doctor. so Sat we went and saw a different PCP, who said he was dehydrated, and again said allergies (he's allergic to cats, and dust - we dont have cats our downstairs neighbor does, and well i do my best to keep the house clean and as dust free as possible.) so to help with the dehydration the doc wanted to give him an IV of saline; the nurse that came to put the iv in was horrible and couldnt get it in to save a life! i must say that Richie has what the lab techs call 'rolling veins' but it was ridiculous. so finally they let me get him some Gatorade, which helped him.
ok so he was throwing up again on sunday (2 times) and then he threw up this morning; so his mom insisted that he go see the neph. so we did. so he got labs done to check his liver, pancreases, gallbladder function. and has an ultra sound tomorrow. if nothing shows up then he will have to get a scope, to see if there is an ulcer or something. our neph prescribed him raglan which he said they usually give to diabetics that have stomach problems, he said that it helps to get the stomach muscles moving to digest food properly.
has anyone ever heard of a ESRD patient having something like this???
any comments, or ideas, or anything we will be very grateful. also please keep us in your thoughts and prayers, that its not something serious, and can be fixed fairly easily.

COuld be neropathetic gastroparesis, but it could be the allergies as well. I've had that issue. Is he on sensipar for elevated PTH?

Its so difficult to say ..there are so many reasons , i have had stages like this. It could be a build up of toxins or a medication or an ulcer. I was throwing up all the time , couldnt keep anything down , but no real reason why not , then it just seemed to go as quickly as it came. Trouble is we all immediately think kidneys when it could actually be a stomach bug. I hope you get it sorted quickly..more tests?

Is he on pd? If so make sure they do an ct scan of his stomach. I had this problem and it turned out there was a blockage in my intestines. I had to have surgury. I guess the number one thing is keep complaining till Richie gets some relief.

I get small bouts of this (seems mines less serious ) for a day or two every month or so.I just thought it was because our system is stresses and compromised we can be suseptable to all bugs and germs but hope you can get some help and my thoughts are with you!! :flower; :flower; :basket:

Wallyz- Richie actually had a parathyroidectomy in feb. and his calcium levels finally leveled out - they are a little on the high side so his meds have been adjusted. will do a bit of research on the neropathetic gastroparesis.

Kickstart/bette- the docs are fairly sure that his meds are not causing this, and we are doing the adaquest test for PD on firday, if the ultrasound that he got today doesnt show anything, then he will have to have get scoped to see if there is an ulcer. bette what caused the blockage, and how was the surgery? we have basically ruled out a bug (like the flu) because he has no fever, and no other signs other than the constant throwing up.
well we have our follow up appointment, on friday, so hopefully we wont need to get scoped before then, and hopefully we get some sort of answers.

Please be very careful when it comes to excessive vomiting and/or diarrhea! Your biggest concern is potassium. Don't hesitate to go to the ER if your husband has any unusual symptoms.

I am with Inara. I am super sensitive to potassium and it goes up really high even when I smell a banana. I went to hospital recently because of constant throwing up and my potassium was 12.1. If you want to check at home and you have a blood pressure machine that shows heart rate then check if there is any change in your hubby's heart rate. If the heartrate is lower than ususal by 20 odd beats then there is also a good chance that is a result of high potassium. Keep a really close eye on that.

I have had stomach upsets for a few months. They put me on Famatodine (Pepcid) once a day and it really helps. Sinus drip can really get a gag reflex going. It does mine and occasionally I will lose breakfast because of it. I hope he feels better soon.

The only time my husband ever had this type of symptom was when his creatinine was sky high, 8.98. If all of the kidney stuff has been ruled out, it sounds like something GI. Hope everything works out for him and a big :cuddle; to you too! It is terrible to watch some on you love go through any illness!

ok well Fridays appointment was So helpful! :sarcasm; Unfortunately we got no answers; the ultrasound came back fine didnt show any problems - which is good. and all the lab test came back fine showing no problems. so all that means is no answers. Sometime next week Rich will have to do a barillium swallow test, to check out his esophagus; we have our monthly appointment in about 2 weeks, so if he's still throwing up regularly and the reglan is having little effects/showing little sings of improvement. the reglan helps a bit, but he still throws up.
So we went over all his medications, and the only one they could think that was maybe causing him to throw up is the renvela; but we decided thats not it because he was taking that with no problems before his parathyroid surgery and has only been taking it since the end of may, and has been throwing up since at least the middle of may.
anyways I will let everyone know what happens after the next tests/results.
Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers... Rich is pretty nervous about this, not knowing is the worst.

I'm ESRD also. I have no idea why but this happens to me a couple times a month. My body just gets so week from the dialysis I guess. Hope he gets better soon :cuddle;

This was happening to Rob for about a 2 months ago. He normally throws up about once every other week, but this was happening every day, sometimes twice a day. His creatinine skyerockted that month. Since he does NxStage home hemo, they ordered an extra dialysate bag, so now he does 25 ltr instead of 20. It worked! He feels sooo much better and went back to his normal self. His body wasn't releasing enough toxins and it made him so sick.
