:thumbup; I have reread and refreshed my memory. Thanks Kitkatz
-
For gender selection, I do prefer females, but renal romance is closed ;D :rofl;
I know we should review them from time to time.
-
Thank you for reminders. :)
-
So, can I post a link to Youtube? I have in the past.
-
Ok, read em again. Just wondering why, since it is a part of the rules, I find frequent posts with misspellings. I understand colloquial spellings (I used one myself in my first sentence), and I understand the English spellings (my grandmother was from England); what I don't understand is simple spelling mistakes. Just sort of glares out at my eyes. Getting down from my soap box now.
-
I do not get it - so what if a word is misspelled -- it is what the person posts that is important -
maybe the person is upset and crying and spelling is not the first thing on the person's mind-
if I offend anyone by not using grammar - I use -'s --- then let me know and I will not posting and send pm's to my friends on this site
-
I'm with twirl. Most spelling errors are actually typos. What about people who's first language is something other than English? Anyway, I think we should be a diligent as possible but ... This is only a spell checker and not a grammar or syntax checker anyway. Should we type in word and copy and paste?
People were complaining about new people using all CAPS. Truthfully, the doubled space stuff with returns after each line is far harder to read (but that's not against the rules). There is one rather clever weekly blog that I've stopped reading for that reason.
Bottom line, not every one on was an English teacher. And some of us who were just don't often have time to proof read.
Bad words, rudeness, etc. are all good but isn't that just common sense?
-
:twocents;
I think the intent is to keep the site as professional as possible. Having said that, I try to put myself in the shoes of the person posting. I know there have been times that the tears are flowing when I post and the last thing on my mind is spelling. It is the message that is important, so I try to cut the poster slack.
I read what first grade students write so I can usually figure out the message. I do understand how difficult it is for some folks to read, though.
All in all, I would be more concerned about losing members who have a hard time posting with correct spelling, than simply skipping posts that are hard to read.
End of :twocents;
Maybe only worth 1 cent.
-
Ditto Alete... but mine is worth a dime.... :twocents; :twocents; :twocents; :twocents; :twocents;
-
Epoman said to me more than once that he wants this site to be up forever and so he put in a spell checker to help us. I am grateful -- or you would see wayyyy more misspelling from me.
Come on guys you can take 2 seconds to hit spell check. It may catch simple typos. AND I know I still have them, but less than if there was not a spell check.
Thanks - :thx;
-
spell check will not check there instead of their or hare instead of hair
and I do not want to hurt anyone's feelings -- which is more important spelling or hurting someone's feelings ?
-
what's more important is not to yell.
-
There are times when we all just have to agree to disagree. I get irritated when I find misspellings in books or magazines too. I'm not being hateful or rude to the poster, I am just stating how I feel. Funny how some people can say what they feel and it's fine, but if others do it a disagreement ensues.
There are folks from all over the world here and different spellings or words are used, that isn't the issue for me. I love to read Monrein's posts...especially when she goes all...I guess it would be called Jamaican. The beauty of this site is that everyone should get to have his/her opinion and feelings...without criticism.
Please Lord, let there be no spelling errors in the above post. AMEN! :cuddle;
-
Well said, Rerun. You are one of the originals and know personally what Epoman wanted and how important the "look" of the forum was to him. Go on other forums and you see disorganization and no order to anything. We all make mistakes (well most of us!) but we all want our "home" tidy and well kept. When someone has a true problem, allowances are made. We didn't make it this far without great guidance and vision. So, if we all do our part, we will be here for the long haul. Now I will hit spell check and pray I didn't offend anyone or yell too loud . .. ..... :rofl; :rofl;
-
I find it very easy to disagree in here are long as you disagree with those that the established people disagree with. But when you disagree with one of the originals then you have to back down. I would expect writers to have proper everything (they have proofreaders) but people on here are just people It seems you originals make them feel welcome until they have an idea different from yours. Maybe then the disagreeables will just decide to bow out and leave it to the originals.
-
Epoman said "Take pride in your posts." I think he was right. I make typos all the time and sometimes I don't catch it until I've read it twice. If you take a minute it's not a big deal. No one expects perfection (well, maybe Sluff does, heheheh) but do your best.
-
Awww DW...we are all originals! One of a kind times a whole bunch. Isn't that the wonder of this site. Diversity makes it the wonderful place that it is.
I, for one, am able to disagree with someone and still love them to death.......
slowly.....
with a pillow! Just kidding! :rofl;

Ok that is fine. But, I have to read it twice to got what you were trying to said. AND if you will have just taken 2 seconds you will have seen fur yourself. See? :waving;
-
LOLOL! I LOVE Rerun....she says it all perfectly!
-
yes rerun, If i hadn't been so angry when I wrote that I would have proofed it and corrected a couple of things. I'll do it now. Maybe if you had read it twice you would have caught your error too.

Perhaps you are taking yourself too seriously.
-
There's a difference, Sir Mr. David in being serious about serious things and being too serious about ridiculous banter....
-
The definition of ridiculous is in the eye of the beholder. What may be ridiculous to one person may be a quite serious matter to another. Who is to judge?
-
You are right David. I know absolutely nothing about you... and classy is a silly word anyway. I know maybe one or two things about every other person on here but not one single things about you other than you know a lot of words. I stand corrected and offer an apology. I don't know what constitutes classy and what doesn't.
-
okay- I am a terrible speller- I do use spellcheck- and if its misspelled- then neither spellcheck ,nor I, could spell it. LOL
-
I still think of myself as a "newbie". Sometimes I look at my profile and am surprised how much time has gone by since I joined. I was very slow to join in and took a long time to feel comfortable. Always was afraid I would make a "mistake". I still make so many mistakes but I love everyone here and will do anything in my power to keep this site operating smoothly.
Did everyone re-read the rules? That was the orginal post from Kitkatz :2thumbsup; :rofl;
-
Read them!

This is what the admin just asked of us. It seems a pretty innocuous request. Bill "Epoman" Halcomb created this site and under his direction, and with his rules which he established as the NEED arose, it grew exponentially to become the very successful site that it is today and the lifeline in our darkest moments that it has been to many. There is no reason and it is inappropriate to lose sight of our roots. The rules are not unreasonably restrictive or censoring and I don't understand the objection to them. The following is excerpted from one of Epoman's posts:
Update: 5/14/06
Well I was hoping not to have to add rules to the site but we are growing and things happen so it's necessary. These rules must be followed, bottomline.

I couldn't have said it better myself.
-
Issue 1:
I consider myself a fairly good speller and a reasonably moral person. I expect proper spelling, grammar, punctuation and even syntax regardless of the formality of the writing. I will go to extra lengths to proof this post, but probably I will miss something. I have only myself for a proofreader. Though not a very good typist, I can put myself in the place of the less educated person and in the place of people who do not have English as a first language or even those who have more technical and less verbal skills..
I consider myself a moral person, as I said, and abhor the ideas of killing, rape and other heinous acts. Yet when horrible things happen, I always consider society’s role in the tragedy in addition to the perpetrator.
It is my personal failure that I have failed to consider why so many people assume the IHD rules to be gospel. I see it now in the great respect or awe that you seem to have for Epoman and his rules. In my zest to talk about, not rules, but how rules can become archaic and may need to be changed, I ignore how these rules are almost sacred to many of you. Please understand that I was not around for the early days.
I stand ready to accept my failure and see the errors of my in appropriate posts.
Issue 2:
I recently came out of a two year depression. It was not kidney related and yet the kidney issue raised its head within the last few months. I thought I was doing so well with every thing, but I was simply deluding myself. I wanted to avoid all negative thoughts. I actually hate the “hate” threads that run in here. I also hate the pity posts. Oh, I am so guilty of contributing to these posts. They are such a temptation.
I believe that, inappropriately, that may be the reason I made fun of so many things. I played these word games on IHD and often made absurd or ridiculous comments. When I made my jokes, they were aimed at people that I liked best and people I thought would take them in the right spirit. More importantly, I say these insipid things only to people that I like. I simply forgot that an issue that appears innocuous to me could in fact be important to another person. I hate when people make “old people” jokes or “vanity” jokes. To be clear, I don’t know what “classy” means. I think it means something different to everyone. I have no ideas who on IHD is classy and who is not. I merely, injected myself, into a humorous conversation between to posters.
My comments were out of place and I accept the responsibility for “butting in” uninvited.
Issue 3:
Finally, I play the silly games on here. Some are way to silly to play but I do it because sometimes in playing silly games with others you can learn a little bit about them beyond what they post about themselves, and also, because silliness can sometimes mask depression. That’s basically all there is to it. I had a tendency to avoid rules on silly games if I thought I could make it a little funnier. Actually, it would have been funnier if I had known the spelling was LAM and not LAMB. I did so and got called down on it. I was offended.
Conclusion:
I accept responsibility for my lack of concern about games rules. None of these things would, individually, caused me to get upset or to revert to depression. The fact is, however, that they all three happened within a fifteen minute time frame and immediately following a rougher than normal dialysis session. I blew up. I was very hurt and feeling really misunderstood and not validated.
I am sorry to have reacted to any of these items publically or online. They were truly non issues.

monrein is classy -- I am not -- that is all ---
nothing bad to either one of us -
we are different as people should me
she knows I think of her as classy
there is no problem between us
I mean it as a compliment
David13 was not offended when I joked about him being un-classy
he is a wonderful friend of mine
and I am sure he is not offened by me naming a puddy after him
that is what friends are for -- right?
-
My brain runs much faster then my fingers can type. Not to mention i cant type very well.
I try to do my best, i want to do as Epo wanted us to do. I am sad i never got to speak/type with him.
Sometimes my spellcheck here at work doesnt seem to work. Or there seem to be words that arnt in the spellcheck system.
So excuse any of my :oops; for that is what they truly what they are.
-
Look, the spell check is there for help. Think of it as a lifeline (50/50, phone a friend). If people cannot read your posts due to tons of typos and misspellings they will probably just skip it rather than struggle through.
It is just there for help and I thank GOD for it. I am a terrible speller. I am the one that asked Epoman to include it in his board.
If it is that insulting than don't use it. I'm sure you will do fine. It is basically for us stupid ones that never learned to spell.
I thank God for digital watches also!

Nice post, Dan. I have been down for the count the past week and barely been on the forum. Just enough to let some know I am still alive (although I doubted it this weekend). I look at the rules as our constitution. Basic rules to keep order. I never got to meet Epoman. My first pm from him asked me to go back and correct post. I was very new to the whole forum thing, and I always do what I am told. He paid for the site so we had a place for our voice. I have grown so much in the past 3 (!!) years. I depend on my friends from all around the world. I wouldn't know anything about the IVIG treatments if it weren't for this forum. The wisest advice I have gotten on IHD was "remember, this is a site with a lot of sick people and they have bad days and good days". It is sometimes easy to see who is the one with kidney failure by the tone of the posts. What does Kitkatz say "somedays you want to throw rocks at God" But at the end of the day, we all really care for each other and are there for support or just a laugh. Oh, and some people have tried posting using text lingo --talk about feeling old! I needed an interpreter :rofl;
-
Dan,
I am just so glad to see you back. I have really missed you.

dw,
I thought your "on the lamb (like david was all day)" was pretty funny. I am, in fact, still intrigued by david and his lamb. Chops? CHOPS??? Be they lamb or lam, hopefully, twirl's "chops" didn't put an end to a beautiful thing for David13 and his friend! Do the silly games threads have rules? Maybe so, maybe not, but they are not Epoman's rules and a little flaunting of them livens up the game (IMHO, well, maybe not so humble...)
As far as the significance of Epoman and his legacy (and HIS rules): http://ihatedialysis.com/forum/index.php?topic=14429.0
Take pride, be proud, you're a part of it and you help make it work!
:clap;
(David, Twirl - BACK AWAY FROM THAT LAMB!)
-
Well Danny Boy you know how I feel. I am just happy your back. :cuddle;
-
Hey, I have a PhD and sometimes I go back and read my old posts and all I can think is "OH NOOOOOOO!!!!, I have typos!!" I use the spell checker, but as Twirl mentioned it does not catch my favorite typo - "you" instead or "your." My college advisor always told me that you can not proofread your own stuff unless you read it backwards! It's true, but it's so boring.
In any case, I read all the rules again :2thumbsup;
-
Why does that not surprise me? Your PhD? You can proofread your on writing if you wait a day or so to do it. That's not always practical.
Oh, I'm trying so hard to be good! Today I told my "toe dude", MD, that I didn't really want to be a smart ass but things just come out of my mouth accidentally (or out of my keyboard).
-
It just occurred to me that my first statement would probably be construed as sarcasm. It was not meant that way at all. I am not surprised that you have a PhD because of the way your express yourself. Please folks, don't jump on me again. I'm really not up to it.
-
Dan, don't take it too personal, trust me even spellcheck makes errors. Just do your best everyone. I make mistakes all the time and I am an admin, however I will get caught everytime if I miss it.
