Hi All, I'm new to this site, and already like what I see. I've been on dialysis for about a year and a half now, and I hate every minute of it. I am a 50 year old woman, living in New York. I have spoken to some doctors at a very prestigious hospital here, and they advise that without a transplant, I'll be lucky to last five years. (I'm also diabetic) This is unacceptable, as I have a ten year old son. I'd like to see him grow up. My husband, we'll call him the Saint, was the first on line to donate his kidney, and he was a match. then after further testing, he was not eligible. Somewhere along the line he was exposed to hepatitis, so, even though he has never had it and is fine, he can't donate because of the enzymes. So, I'm back to square one and trying to find other avenues for live donors. Thanks for listening.

Welcome to IHD! First off...don't take a doctor's time line as gospel. They are guessing, because we are all individuals and react to treatments or illnesses differently. Keep your head up...things are constantly changing.
You'll find information, support and a multitude of laughs here. Enjoy! :)

It's nice to meet you, too! Are you on "the list" Marti? The testing process is a frustrating one to say the least. I also had three mtching donors (including my husband). Good luck. You have found a great support system here at IHD. Do you have any other possible live donors lined up? I look forward to hearing more from you. :waving;

Hi Marti and welcome. I've also be dialysing for a year and a half. A pretty long year and a half I have to say. As the others said, ignore timeframes from docs. There are people here who've been doing dialysis for nearly 30 years! (Go Zach). Look forward to getting to know you.

It cracks me up when these Doctors try to tell you how long you have to live! Just like a weatherman trying to predict next winter in the spring.Welcome and hang in there! :welcomesign;

Welcome to our community! I agree very much with what others have said concerning our life expectation. I had a brother who was a very bad diabetic - he had even gone blind because of it. He was not in a good condition at all, and yet he lasted 10 years on dialysis. I am now in my 4th year and am looking forward to lots more - want to see my 6 yr old grandson grow up!
You have found a great group for information and support - you have found your IHD family :grouphug; Please take advantage of all that this site has to offer. Read and post!
