Title: Getting treated for rejection: Update
Post by: donnia on May 23, 2009, 12:05:23 AM

Well, I am back at my transplant hospital in Lubbock.  We have not received results from my biopsy yet but we did get blood tests back that showed my immunosuppresents were low.  They don't like to see the number over 500 because it puts you at too much risk for rejection.  Mine was 949 so that shows I am battling rejection.  Dr. Helfrich called me at 4:20 and we were on the road by 5:10.  I was admitted and they have done blood work and started my IV.  At 8am they will take me for a sonogram and more blood work then start IV immunosuppresents.  I will update often :)

Please say a little prayer that "Hope" fights back and kicks back in!  Joyce already told me 'her kidney ain't no wimp' so I think everything will be fine :)

(I welcome your emails..... I'm gonna get awfully bored in the hospital!!!!!)

Update:

Cretinine Tuesday before dialysis = 5.0
Creatinine last night when I got to Lubbock = 3.7

Nurse said she doesn't have orders to do the IV treatments.... wth?  I guess my tx dr plans on giving the orders when he gets here.  My tx nephrologist is who has ordered a sono of the kidney at 8am.

Will update with any more information as I receive it... I hope you dont get sick of my meaningless updates.... I'm bored LOL!   :flower;

Just got back from my tests.... they actually put radioactive stuff in my iv to see how quickly my kidney would process it.  We won't get the results till later.  They are going to go ahead and start the iv immunosuppresents just incase.  My tx nephrologist said 2 - 3  treatments  wouldnt hurt me if it isn't rejection.... the bad thing about it is.... as my neph put it... it is the motherload of meds.... will totally deplete my immune system.  No work or being around people for about 4 weeks.... just like a new tx.

Will update more when I hear more  :flower;

Being isolated for 4 weeks will be no joy ride, but at least you'll have your IHD friends to visit!

I hope the tests turn out well.

Well, the central line hurt like tha dickens.... but it was quick... now they can take the painful IV out.

They are going to stop the oral prednisone and give me prednisone in the central line.... along with the immunosuppresents and benedryl  (woot woot!!!!).  Since my hip replacement April 28th I have had a hard time getting comfortable and sleeping.  I get leg spasms and benedryl helps with the spasms.

Updates to come   :flower;

Dont know if I already said this.....

The dr said if my biopsy comes back positive for rejection I may be here 10-14 days for treatment!  Right now they are treating for rejection based on my immunosuppresent levels.... getting over 500 shows you are getting close to rejection... I thought my number was 949 but it was 969.  So that shows I am battling some rejection therefore we went ahead and started treatment.  The bad thing is that it breaks down your immune system to basically zero.  I will not be able to work for 4-6 weeks.  I will have to treat this more sensitive than when I came home with my fresh kidney.

Thanks for all the support!!!!

I am done with my first treatment. Now I have to start wearing a mask. My nurse said after about my 5th treatment, the staff will have to start wearing gowns and masks.

Oh yeah.... since being on the treatment 6 hours, I think I have peed about 900 ml! Before I was peeing.... but I would pee about 100 ml at a time.... now I am peeing between 200 - 300 at a time.... does that make sense???

I posted on the other thread and then I found this.  :flower;

Whew, that emotional roller coaster can sap your energy.  I imagine it takes a day or two for the immunosuppressives to really start taking action if you have already started showing signs of rejection.   I'm guessing that once you have to knock down the refection process instead of just keeping it from starting up (as in a fresh transplant), it takes a little longer.  Does that make sense?

Do you ever use visualization?  If so, start imagining all your IHD friends, miniaturized, roaming inside your body in search of those bad guys (I can never remember what those cells are called).  We're zapping them as we find them and your creatinine is going down with every one we take out.  There are loads of us and we're fearless, so we aren't going to give up easily.   :Kit n Stik;

Sending you loads of love and hugs, Donnia!

Thank you..... Thank you..... Thank you!!!!!!!

Okay.... things have changed bigtime..... here's the jist.

They have stopped the treatment because the biopsy shows it is not rejection.

They are saying 'chronic' tubular necrosis.  But even my coordinator said it doesn't seem 'chroni'c, seems it would be 'acute' because it came on quickly.

This is what I found on acute tubular necrosis:

The duration of symptoms varies. The decreased urine output phase may last from a few days to 6 weeks or more (yes this happened to me). This is occasionally followed by a period of high urine output, where the healed and newly functioning kidneys try to clear the body of fluid and wastes (this is happening to me right now... peeing like a russian racehorse!!!).

One or two days after urine output rises, symptoms reduce and laboratory values begin to return to normal (happening right now).

Everything that I have read so far has been positive on this.... I hope this is what I have!!!  Seems like it will correct itself and get back to normal.... Please keep me in your prayers.  Im not out of the woods yet.

Prograf can damage the tubals. That has happened to me. I take bi-carb and phosphorous. I am glad that your biopsy showed no rejection! :grouphug;

Just talked to the dr.  and he is sending me home today.  The preliminary biopsy report says it is chronic graft necrosis.  Which means I probably had actute rejection 3 wks ago but now it has gone further.  It has probably shaved some time off of my kidney.  We wont know how much until it starts to fail.  My creatinine is 3.1 right now and if it gets to 2 I will be happy.... hopefully it will get lower though.

I am sooooooooooooo sueing the pants off the surgeon.  The one drug that he used that we think started all this is KNOWN to attack the kidney.  If he would have taken 3 minutes to call my kidney dr, he would have been told not to use it.  I am so upset!

Modify:  The drug is vancamiacyn.... dont let anyone use it on you!

Thank you for being here for me my sweets!

donnia, So happy to hear you are going home. That is wonderful news. I'll keep praying that your numbers go in the right direction. Is the drug your talking about Vancomycin the antibiotic? Gets lots of rest when you get home.  :cuddle;

Donnia, it's great to hear that you're going home. The hospital is such a depressing place.
I'm sorry to hear about the surgeon screwing up. I'll continue to keep praying that your numbers go down.

Take care  :cuddle;

I've been reading this thread and hope your numbers go down, too!! I can't believe the stupidity of some doctors!!! I hope you get an apology out of that surgeon....my mom had some issues with her transplant and the surgeon flat out apologized and admitted he did wrong..she was floored but respects him now even more. Bless your heart! You are in my thoughts!

Sorry Donnia, just saw this thread and read each one. Boy you had a worse time than me in the hospital in May. I hope your kidney improves some more. Iguess I should get a new PDR to cary around local doctors office to check on meds (faster than getting a hold of someone at my tx center).

Reminds me, I need to get my monthly labs done this week, well tomorrow would be good.

Did your hospital have an email service? Could have had hospitals emailing each other  :rofl; :rofl;

That was the easiest way to keep multiple people updated at once besides word of mouth over the phone.Need to switch to verizon to get voice to text capability, so if I amgoing to be blind for several months, that would be the easiest and only way to be connected somewhat to IHD. ;D

Just my 2 cents Donnia - but if it ain't broke - don't fix it! I think I would hold off making any changes - you've had great improvement and changing meds again could create another challenge. I would give it more time to stabilize.

The phone is new to Verizon on a Motorola q9 phone that is specially ordered from Verizon. Just found out about it coming out from The American Federation For The Blind.

As for that medication, that is the first I have heard of it. It's not listed in any information I have.

That's good donnia.
Are those lab results from your local hospital or from your transplant clinic?

Reason I'm asking is my local hospital gives it only in whole numbers such as 1.5. Yet when my transplant center does it, they give it's values like yours. Just curious is all.
