Title: Got my chest catheter out today!
Post by: bette1 on May 21, 2009, 02:32:32 PM
I am so excited.   :yahoo; I went out and bought a new top to celebrate.  We are on the countdown to taking a shower and going swimming!  I can't believe I had that thing in for over a year!  Now I just need to buy some scar stuff to fade the spots on my chest.

A MILLION CONGRATULATIONS TO YOU!!!  :clap;

I have a question about it though. I had a catheter placed for emergency dialysis 2 weeks ago and its not coming out for another month or so until my fistula matures but...how does it feel when it is removed? is it uncomfortable? painful? slightly weird? do the doctors numb you? put you to sleep? or is it really quick? Please let me know. Thanks.

When the doctor pulled my catheter, it felt weird, but there was no pain. I was awake for the procedure that was done in the hospital (In case of complications, of which there were none.)

I got mine out also today after 4 long years! Shower here I come!!

As for it coming out, the lidocaine to numb the area was like beestings, the needle, but after that painless. Felt some tugging, as they needed to snip that velcro like cuff out of the skin, but didn't feel the tubing coming out at all.

A small bandage and no bleeding, and he said can shower in 24 hours. No pain after the numbness wore off either.

Good luck with yours  :2thumbsup;

Oh, it was done in the doc's office, took less than 5 minutes.   :yahoo;

Don't worry.  The worse thing about the chest catheter coming out was the shots of numbing medicatiion.  Little pin pricks.  You can feel the doctor tugging on the catheter, but it doesn't hurt.  After I got my catheter out, I went shopping and cleaned my house.

Since my Fistulatoma (I invented a new word!) blew up my new access two weeks ago, we're finally back on 17 gauge needles on the new fistula, so I'll probably have my catheter out in roughly three weeks.

I've been taking showers regularly (I feel oogey if I don't) by using Ziploc bags cut in half with plastic tape around the edges.  The Tegaderm was costing too much, so sometimes you have to improvise.

I will be happy to wash that area fully again (I have tape rash from the daily gauze replacement) and swim this summer.

Thanks to everyone for the heads up on the catheter removal.  I'm not so fearful of the procedure now.

I waited all summer for them to take mine out, (last year) Couldn't wait! So I could take my grand kids swimming, But Alas, the pool was closed before mine was out. I don't think that it left a scar big enough to worry about special creams or anything. BUT! The pool opens on Memorial Day, which is this  Monday. It may even be memorial day weekend, which is great because that means it's open today! I hated my catheter(s). The first one, I pulled out in my sleep, probably put my arm on it and turned over. I woke up and there it was laying on my bed. The second one they put just sticking out of the side of my neck! (It was temporary. or more temporary) There I was, walking around with this thing sticking out of my neck. ("Hey mister, what's that thing sticking out of your neck?) It only lasted a week and a half. The third one was below the neckline. All three were painful, sort of a constant dull ache. I remember seeing the other's fistulas, all blown up and thinking that I wanted just to keep my catheter rather than risk having an anurism (sp?) But now that the catheter is gone and I'm using the fistula, I'm happy snappy! It's a great life we live. Thank God for everything. . . even the bad stuff. There's somebody out out there, (Maybe in the next house over) that's got a whole lot worse than I do. NO CATHETER, let's go swimmin'!

I want a tub bath... a long, luxurious tub bath maybe even with bubbles and a geisha to attend to my every need.
