Title: Trying My Own Needles
Post by: kimcanada on May 21, 2009, 04:33:48 AM
I have asked my favorate nurse if I could try my own needles tomorrow...

I have been waiting for months for help, or to be shown or whatever.  So I decided that I will just try it myself.  My nurses have been missing as much as they have been gettiong the dang needle in lately so how much harder would it be for me to do my own!!!

I am nervous, but   strangely excited.  This will happen on Friday   :o

That's great Kim.  I hope it all goes well and that you have even better success than the nurses.  Slow and steady wins the race.   :cuddle;

You've probably heard other people say it, but once you perfect your own sticking, you'll NEVER want another person to stick your access. That's the way it is with me.

That's what I'm told.  And you still get the button holes?

At my center the techs stick you (not the nurses).  Unless you want button holes then a speciall nurses will stick you and teach you to stick yourself.   And she, Jamie, is my buddy.

Kim, as a newbie sticker, please let me know how it goes.

We had a clinic visit today and I asked again about button holes. They are re-evaluating using that procedure so I'm going to push for it. I think my husband would do well with sticking himself if he had button holes....

It isn't that I don't want to stick him, but I think his having more control would be to his benefit.

Anyway, Kim, I think it is great! Go for it!

I try, but I can't even watch a teeny weeny blood sample needle being stuck in me. I can only just watch blood being drawn when it's in.

I've got a long way to go...

Well today was the day...

The day that I was going to walk into dialysis roll up my sleeves and do my first needle...

I got to dialysis abit early this morning, I didn't want to feel rushed,  I asked for Paula, (the nurse that I had asked to help me on Wednesday)

Paula came over and I had everything in front of me ready.

Paula told me what to expect, and said that she would put in the first needle and I was to watch the angle and depth...

This I did, almost as soon as she punctured my skin, blood came out of the hole... I willed myself not to turn away.

Her next instruction was to feel my vain with the turnake  (sp) on .... I was shocked at what my vain felt like, I had never felt it with the turnkey on, it was strong and solid, I thought to myself... I can't miss that!

Then we picked out a spot... I brought the needle to my skin (which had a TON of Emla on it) and began to push... my skin indented about 10mm... I could NOT believe how tough my skin is.

I was pulling back my skin to make it taught....and still could not get the needle in, thats when Paula put her finger on my arm and pulled the other side of the needle taught, and BOOM!!!!! that sucker was in...

Paula then guided me at what angle to continue.... and then she said... STRAIGHTEN it out

THE DAMN NEEDLE WAS IN!!!!!!

I have to tell you I can't wait to do it again, I cried once the needle was in, I have no idea why I cried but I did.

And I will tell you all one more thing, I was thinking of IHD as I was doing this, I knew you all were behind me and I love you all for that!!!

Kim, you rock!

You'll have to put this up on your blog FOR SURE!

I stick my husband and I cannot believe how hard I have to push sometimes! I really understand that part!

I know you are walking on clouds right now. And you should be!  :clap; :clap; :clap;

Kim, I cried reading your post and I cried also the first time I got my own needle in.  Tears of relief and immense self-satisfaction.  I'm so glad you did well and in no time at all you'll be posting an instructional video on self-cannulation, either on your blog or You Tube or both.  Feel good about yourself girl.  There's real strength in self-reliance when we're able to pull it off.

BTW..the very first time I was cannulated, by a nurse of course, I was brave, used no cream or lidocaine but once both needles were in, I threw up over the other side of the chair.  No warning, no nothing.  Never did it again.

Well done Kim.....you go girl!  You'll want to do it all the time now and you certainly won't want anyone doing it for you.  I asked if I could do my needles the first day I went on dialysis because I thought if I let anyone else do them I would never do it myself.  They let me guide the needles in on the first day and the second day I did it with a little help and the third day on my own.  Give yourself a week and you will be an expert!!  I am a pussy though, I still use the lidnocaine!  They told me because I have only been on dialysis a couple of months to wait until I have a bit of scar tissue build up and then to try without the lidnocaine.  I bet you feel so much more in control now doing it yourself.  You know your body so well I doubt you will ever miss a beat now!  Fantastic effort. xx

 :cheer: :cheer: :cheer:  Wooo hooo Kimmy that is a wonderful achievement.

I think it's the hardest part of all this crap to get through. Those needles are just ridiculously HUGE. I can say that because this chicken has done PD for the past four years and the thought of doing my own needles makes me go....   :puke;

Wattle, you will know when you are ready... If someone would have told me 2 years ago that I would do my own needles I would have thought they lost their mind!!

Day 2:

Two needles, no problems, pump speed 440!!!  God this feels great!   :bandance;
