Local kidney to be transplanted in Vancouver

This weekend Thelma Doherty will embark on the longest flight of her life when she boards a plane to Vancouver to give her 54-year old brother, Len, a new lease on life. The 56-year old Doherty chose to become a live kidney donor following her brother’s battle with kidney failure.

“He didn’t tell us right away about his condition, I think he didn’t want us to worry,” said Doherty. “He’s been suffering from kidney failure for the last three years. He’s not on dialysis. He’s taking medication but that isn’t doing the trick any more. He mentioned (his kidneys) were closing down and I didn’t hesitate and said if there’s anything that could be done I would do it.”
Out of their seven other siblings Doherty, the youngest girl in the family, was found to be the most compatible donor for her brother, the youngest boy.  Donors do not have to be related, must be over 18 and normally under 70 years of age, in good general health without any indication of high blood pressure, cancer, diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease or hepatitis.
