- The second annual Bowling for Dialysis was held at Valley Bowl Saturday night and raised a record $12,300.

Organizer Jennifer Desjardins said the money collected from the two-hour event will go a long way to reaching the goal of $770,000 for a new five-unit dialysis system at the Pontiac Community Hospital in Shawville, Quebec.

"That's a really good amount because we had less attendance this year," she said.

Scotiabank in Pembroke was the major sponsor of the event and matched the amount raised with $5,000 and a further $1,000 raised by a team of volunteers. In the first Bowling for Dialysis last year, $11,000 was raised for the unit.

The quest for a dialysis unit is a long-term one, said Ms. Dejardins, but one that can be achieved with the community's help.

"The Pontiac community has been great at holding different fundraisers," she said.

Right now, dialysis patients and transplant patients must travel two and a half hours to Gatineau for a treatment which could take up to six hours.

The next fundraising event for the dialysis unit project will be held on Thursday, May 14 at 7:30 p. m. at the Auberge Mont Blanc in Portage-du-Fort. The event will be hosted by Shawville Shoes and Boutique Gwendoline.
