From one coach to another: Kidney transplant went well

INDIANAPOLIS — Ryan Haywood and Justin Young were reported to be out of surgery and doing well, according to Brenda Haywood, mother of the Mt. Carmel High School Golden Aces basketball coach who donated a kidney to his assistant and close friend.

Brenda Haywood, in a telephone call to the Register at approximately 12:20 p.m. Friday, said it was too soon to tell if everything was going OK, but that the surgeons were monitoring both Ryan and Justin at the IUPUI Medical Center in Indianapolis.

Lindy Gower, daughter of Register Editor Phil Gower and his wife, Beth, is a classmate of both Young and Ryan Haywood, and a surgical nurse on the IUPUI transplant team. She was a part of the surgical procedure. Brenda Haywood said Gower made a video of the procedure for the families.

Ryan Haywood will be able to come home in two or three days, Brenda Haywood said, while Young will probably be released Tuesday.

Brenda Haywood and her daughter-in-law, Tiffany, are both nurses. Brenda also said that when her son found out about his friend’s conditions, he said, “I just can’t sit by, watch my friend get sicker and sicker and not help him.”

She said that’s when he made the decision that, if they matched, he would donate a kidney. Brenda said the procedure went “up until the last minute,” that Young went on dialysis about 10 day ago.

“We’re thankful for all the prayers,” she added.
