9 p.m. Fri., 3:15 p.m. May 4 and 5:15 p.m. May 7 at the Kabuki.
As Pat Spurgeon's drumsticks move across his freshly assembled kit, he's the picture of health. His curly Sideshow Bob hair bounces a little as he expertly knocks out a quick solo. Moments later, he's hooked up to an IV - his skills as a musician haven't failed him, but his single working kidney doesn't have much time left. Jim Granato's locally produced documentary about the drummer for Oakland independent rock band Rogue Wave shows the heart and soul of the Bay Area rock scene, which rallied around Spurgeon to find a kidney donor with his rare blood type. Spurgeon is a good subject - informative and funny as he goes through grueling dialysis while on tour. The documentary culminates with a benefit concert. Local artists and bands, including John Vanderslice, Nada Surf and Ben Gibbard from Death Cab for Cutie, also appear.
