MIDDLETOWN — Two police officers, checking the security of a dialysis office, were exposed to an acid solution and had to be taken to the hospital this morning.

Officers Lisa Vreeland and Adam Colfer were treated at Riverview Medical Center in Red Bank and released, said Lt. John Lenge.

He said around 2 a.m. the officers noticed an open back door at the Middletown Dialysis Office in Union Square Mall on Route 35. The officers went inside to check the building and they smelled a strong chemical odor, then began to feel ill, said Lenge.

They were taken to the hospital, and the Middletown Fire Station 8, Middletown Fire Department's HazMat unit, the Monmouth County Health Department's HazMat Unit, and the Middletown Health Department responded to the scene.

They determined the officers were exposed to an acid concentrate used in the dialysis process.

The building was determined to be safe around 5:30 a.m.
