Title: What about .gif ani

I made my picture, an animated .gif of my grand kids. I didn't have one of them all together, so I made an animation. of two of them, then the other one.  It comes up in my identity picture as a .png. I've noticed other people having gif-ani. What's the deal? Anybody know?
