Before Marvin got sick years ago, he was an avid golfer -- once, twice a week -- every time he got the chance, he was on the golf course. Then, we found out he had ESRD and started dialysis four days later. Unfortunately, he soon figured out that he couldn't hold out for golfing anymore. The last time he golfed was about 13 years ago -- just a year after he started dialysis. He made it to the third hole before he called me to come and get him; he physically just couldn't do it. He was so disappointed. He decided then he'd give up the sport.
Well, all the years went by, and Marvin's had so many surgeries since then (four grafts in the arms, two fistulas in the arms, 14 perm caths, a transplanted kidney in, a transplanted kidney out, an abdominal pacemaker, etc.). Along with all the surgeries and all the "mending," dialysis has taken its toll on Marvin's energy and stamina. But, then we started home hemo 20 months ago, and his energy has picked up considerably.
Today, I called home during my break between classes, and Marvin wasn't home. When I reached him on his cell, he said he was on the way to the golf course with a buddy of his. "I woke up this morning and decided I wanted to see if I could golf again," Marvin told me. "I called Randy, and he said, 'Let's go.'"
Marvin shot nine holes of golf today! Randy only beat him by two strokes (Randy's a few years younger and an extremely healthy man). Marvin was tickled beyond words with himself. Then tonight, Marvin's youth baseball team had a game, and Marvin went and coached for two hours! It's been a very good day for Marvin physically, and we both think it's because of the home hemo. It's so wonderful to see him enjoying the things he loved pre-dialysis!

That is truly inspirational! :2thumbsup;

Fantastic!

Wow! :yahoo;
Hubby has been debating whether to start home hemo once his fistula is fully operational. He is still working and doesn't really want to put in the training time. I will definitely be passing this story along. I tell him that many people report feeling much better on home hemo, but he remains unconvinced.

Yay for Marvin!
Rocker- tell your hubby that the mortality rate of Home Hemo is half that of in center.

For Marvin's Golf Game:
The Golf Pro Prayer
The Pro is my Shepherd, I shall not Slice.
He maketh me to Drive Straight Down Green Fairways;
He leadeth me Safely across Still Water-Hazards;
He restoreth my Approach Shots.
He Leadeth me in the Paths of Accuracy for my Game's Sake.
Yea, though I chip through the Roughs in the shadows of Sand Traps,
I will fear no Bogies. For his Advice is with me;
His Putter and Irons, they comfort me.
He prepareth my Strategy for me in the presence of mine Opponents;
He anointeth my head with Confidence:
The Cup will not be runneth over!
Surely Birdies and Eagles shall follow me all the Rounds of my Life,
And I will score in the Low Eighties

Kit --
Loved the poem! Thank you so much for posting it. Marvin said he prayed something along those lines last week when he went out on the course. Your poem made his day!
