Title: Reactions to sedatives during surgery
Post by: RightSide on April 10, 2009, 08:21:52 PM
I had a TURP (prostate) operation on December 29, for which they gave me Fentanyl.  That stuff zonked me out for 14 hours (!!!), so I had to stay overnight at the hospital.

I had the fistula operation on April 3, for which they gave me Versed.  Versed is supposed to be mild, but it still zonked me out for 12 hours, so again I had to stay overnight at the hospital.

I never had a problem with sedatives before.  I'm wondering if this is due to my ESRD and the fact that my kidneys don't clear stuff from my blood like they used to?

If I have to have another operation, I'm going to ask them to NOT give me any sedatives.  Just anesthesia.

Could be the kidneys.  Could be an idiosyncratic reaction, or they could be affected by other meds.

I sing when I wake up form anesthesia.  It's pretty funny.

I have a hard time clearing them out until I've had another dialysis session.  I'm not as bad as you, since I do wake up on time - but I'm awfully groggy until my next run.  I figured it was the lack of kidney function to eliminate them.
