Tomorrow is the Neph's appointment to discuss when, who, how etc. about a fistala, etc. I've been reading all the posts like crazy and making lists of questions to ask. Just Wondering if anyone has any last minute suggestions for what I should ask....and be prepared for.
This (you guys) have been a reallly big help in preparing me for this.

How many has he done?
What shape are your veins in? (Have they done the ultrasound vein mapping yet? If they have, he should have some idea.) Are you going to be able to have a natural fistula?
They can do a fistula in your wrist, your forearm, and your upper arm. Talk to him about your piano playing. Discuss if doing the wrist site might make that more difficult.
-
thanks. I had none of those things on my list... they have not done the mapping. tomorrow will be the first steps

The neph sent us to a vascular surgeon (he did a bad job) and the next time I made sure to ask the dialysis nurses who they would recommend - and it was NOT the first doc. The next surgeon was wonderful - does all the child hemo patient fistula's so he is a master at making it work.
-
Do NOT ask him how much he makes a year!!!
:rofl;
-
very important to ask him how many he has done
my first one was a failure and it was on my wrist - done by a Conroe doctor
and I am glad it failed
mine I have now, by a doctor in Houston, is on my upper arm and it is better
I can wear sleeves to cover most of it
your arm - after a year or so will look very different
I went to a doc in downtown Houston at an access center
Rosenberg or Rosen- something
but he was good
good luck

Wow... that's a lot. I'm awake and getting ready to go. Will report in tonight.

This is excellent advice. Doctors will usually recommend their friends when you ask about a specialist. The nurses and techs are the team members who see the fistulas day in and day out and actually have to use them. They know who the good surgeons are and who the not-so-good surgeons are. . .

Is your Dr downtown DW? Mine is in Memorial City Hospital he was a very nice man... All the questions they told you to ask are really good questions...
-
All of my doctors are downtown from Methodist... My internist is a neighbor and he handpicked them all... I trust them.. although I haven't met the surgeon yet. Don't know who that will be...Ouch.

I can't give you to much advice, you have gotten tons already. But you do have me :cheer: over here for you!

Ask him if he spends more than 12 seconds with his patients.
Ask him if he actually listens, or does he just go "mm-hmm" and try to end the conversation as quickly as possible.
And finally, ask him if he talks down to you with a really smug additude, would he mind if you punched him squarely in the jaw?

I just got home from my doctor. Today's results were disappointing me to me but probably good. The creatin was much higher than last time. He wanted me in the hospital this week but I talked him into postponing it until I get my taxes in the mail. I'll start two weeks from today. He was the fistala and a cather done at the same time and to start dialysis in the hospital so he can monitor for the first week. He says I will do well as I have not other complications and nutritionally I'm in good shape (I'm sure he meant "good shape for an old dude" but he was wise enough not to say it.
And no, Stacey, he will not talk down to me. He spent over 45 minutes with me today and even walked me out. And I had a long list of questions for me. You need to come to Houston. We have some of the best doctors in the world here and I am fortunate to see many of them.
I am upset about going to the hospital for a week, but I feel conficent about everything. All of the information that I got here was invaluable to me. Thanks to all... And I did tell him about the Website... So everybody be on your best behavior today (lol) because I expect he'll look in.
-
oh no,
will you be off IHD for a week :o
-
hmmm, good question...i guess so. I dread it but in the long run it will take the pressure off me. I mean I know what I'm going to do (I think)
-
My dad had to do the same thing. Get both lines put in at the same time. We are all here for you if you need us :cuddle;
-
The week in the hospital doesn't sound thrilling, but it will probably be easier on you in the long run. That first week of D is a b**** for most people.
A 45 minute consultation - I'm impressed!
-
what are we going to do around here without our resident smartass ??? :'(
-
DW,
Sorry that you have to go into the Hospital... We are a hop skip and a jump away. You going to be in methodist or memorial? Let me know if you need anything..
-
Actually I think it may be better for me since I live alone. It looks like Dr. Olivero has it all planned out. I trust him.
It will be Methodist... Where are you anyway? Not downtown are you?
I don't know if they have internet connections or not. I do know the dialysis center does. I'll be looking for a laptop this week. Any suggestions? I can't give up my IHD nor my Sudoku puzzles.

I am near Memorial City Hospital... (I-10 & Beltway 8) I have a Sony Laptop and I love it... Dell has a Lap top on sell right now . Try Best Buy there is one on 59 & Gessner
-
My Desktop is a Dell. I have no problems with it but its not great either. I have no idea how to set up a network but surely someone will take pity on me. I have to look at the because my main problem (and the reason I don't have one) is the monitor. Same problem with a cell phone (which I don't have and will need to get). I guess they will let you talk on the phone.
If I were going to Memorial I'd say to come on by, but I wouldn't wish a trip to the Medical Center on my worst eneny. The doctor said he'd take care of getting me a good room so I wouldn't have that horrible check in experience (at least you do in St. Luke's). I told him I was sure Barbara Bush was gone by now and could he get that room for me? I think the answer amount to a "no".\
Dr. Juan Olivero (young one) and Dr. Joseph Naoun (Surgeon) -- ever hear of Joseph? I think I'll go goodle him.
-
No I went to Dr. Weiner (Surgeon) and Dr. Anuil Sheth (Neph) I was not happy with Dr. Weiner but I LOVE Dr. Sheth He is very caring and even tells my sisters to call him if they have questions. he always calls them back.
Well do you have any relatives near by?
