Title: Cycler Drain Bags - Need Help Soon!
Post by: joyfulmother on April 01, 2009, 04:50:11 PM
Monday after training my nurse sent me home with 2 drain bags in case the line doesn't reach to my bathroom and it didn't.  I used one Mon and Tues night and called my nurse so she could add them to my prescription.  Today I FORGOT to get some extras till mine get here!!  I hooked the machine up just now to the one I used last night - put it on an old towel.

Now I'm wondering if that is the wrong thing to do.  If it is, I have no idea what to do tonight.  What do you know?

I can't use the drain lines either... they don't reach my bathroom. I use drain bags. I use the same bags for a week at a time. They are drained into my bathtub during the day. This is how I have been taught to do it, but rules change from hospital to hospital so ask your clinic what they want you to do.

I am on the Fresenius Sleep Safe machine. I hope this helps.

I was told to never use the same bag twice. My Pd nurses keep supplies on hand in case you need them before your next delivery.

Well, I did reuse one last night but my hubby is on his way to pick up more from my PD nurse and they added bags to my order so I guess I'm set.  Thanks for the input.

Just a thought I also use the drain bags but was trained to place them in a plastic tub in case of a leak and easier handling.

Mine didn't reach to the toilet either, so I requested a box of extensions (this has to be approved by your nurse).  No problem now.

I didn't want to use the drain line to the toilet because I was afraid of my cat disturbing it in some way and I'd be left with a mess.  I use a new set of drain bags every night.  Over the Christmas holiday, my husband and I went to Hilton Head where I'd requested a machine and supplies to be delivered.  For the first time in all of our travels, one of the boxes didn't arrive with all of the others and it turned out to be the drain sets.  I did have a new drain line that I had brought along which I use to drain the bags in the morning so I called home to my PD nurse and asked if or how often I could reuse the drain line since I didn't know where my missing box was or how soon I'd receive it.  She told me I could use the drain line for up to one week.  Based on that, I'm thinking it shouldn't be a problem to reuse the drain set either but because I'm not sure, I'll be asking my PD nurse about this at my next appointment on Tuesday.  And as oleboy mentioned, be sure and pick up an inexpensive plastic tub at Target or Walmart and place the empty bags inside of it when you're loading your tubing.  I've had the misfortune of having leaky drain bags and didn't discover it until I got up the next morning.  What a mess!
