Protein is a very important part of our diet. In the "old" days we were told to limit our protein intake to about 60 grams a day. Today, with more scientific research, it is now recommended that we consume about 1.2 grams of protein per kilogram of weight, per day.
Here is an interesting article from the American Association of Kidney Patients (AAKP):

Good to know. Thanks! ;)

While I'm on dialysis, I drink Muscle Milk -- 32 grams of protein.
I use the pre-mixed 17 oz. bottle from the local deli. Just make sure not to use the chocolate flavor, because it's too high in potassium. Most other flavors are: about 330 Potassium and 334mg Phosphorus. About three PhosLos.
I believe there is also an 11 oz. bottle with 21 grams of protein.

***Please note: The company that makes Muscle Milk has changed the formula, and it now contains over 1,000 mg of potassium in the 17 oz. bottle. People on dialysis should not use it.***

Then I only need 55 grams of protien a day. That is one good thing about being short and skinny. Less blood to clean.

mine would be about 76 grams of protein daily

if you look at the phosphorus it says 35%-how do you figure out what that is?can this be taken during dialysis with a binder?
I was only looking at the french vanillia

i am a perioneal dialysis patient since last two years .
i was always confused about protein intake in my predialysis stage.
u have to take 40 gm protein at that stage{predialysis}
now one group of neph suggested complete stopping of animal protein and other group suggested that up to 20 gm of 40 gm intake should be of animal origin.
in my case complete stoppage of animal protein made ne weak and i started showing uremic symptoms much earlier.
can i have some suggestion

The % of phosphorus on most food labels usually refers to the Daily Allowance (DA), which for phosphorus (PO4) is 1,000 mg. So if the listed PO4 is 35%, then the amount is 350 mg. That's about 3 PhosLo gel caps, depending on your own situation. You can drink it during dialysis (with your binders), but remember to add it to your fluid-loss rate.

As to animal protein vs. plant protein, according to the link from the American Association of Kidney Patients (AAKP) :
http://198.104.149.102/aakp-library/balancing-protein-in-the-renal-diet/
What are the sources of protein?
High quality sources of protein include such things as chicken, fish, turkey, lean meat, duck, lamb, fresh pork, eggs and limited amounts of milk products. Lower quality sources of protein include grains, fruits and vegetables, which are not as well utilized by the body as are the animal sources listed above, but are still necessary in the diet.
How much protein should patients on dialysis consume?
According to the National Kidney Foundation (NKF), patients receiving hemodialysis should take in approximately 1.2 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight. Of that, 50 percent or more should come from high quality animal sources. This means that a medium-framed adult who is 5 feet 4 inches tall, and weighs roughly 143 pounds (65 kg), should consume 78 grams of protein daily. Of course, each patient is an individual and everybody?s needs are different. Patients that are on peritoneal dialysis or who have received a transplant may have different needs. Your dietitian will work with you to help determine your protein needs.

I am lucky...no restrictions for food whatsoever, so far....who knows how long this will last. My problem is that I am low in phosphates....

i am talking about protein intake in predialysis phase.
animalprotein can be taken in predialysis phase?

Here is another article from the AAKP site about the predialysis patient helping prolong their kidney function through diet.
Make sure to stretch out your protein intake. In other words, don't eat all of your protein at one time. This makes your kidneys work harder. Start thinking of vegetables and grains as the main dish and meats as the side dish. Research has shown phosphorus tends to speed up the loss of kidney function.

While I'm on dialysis, I drink Muscle Milk -- 32 grams of protein.
Is there some advantage to drinking it while hooked up to the machine? I was told to take the neph-cap vitamins after dialysis, not before, because the dialysis would just strip them right back out. Does the same hold true for the protein?
I also find that dialysis makes me really, really hungry. After the first two hours, I am absolutely starved. On the days I don't have dialysis, I have to remind myself to eat, so I do wonder if the protein and vitamins I'm losing to the filter have a lot to do with it. Would having a snack with protein in it help with the hunger pangs? I usually have something small like an apple or dried apple chips, but it's never enough, and I end up eating far too much at dinner when I get home from the center. I need to lose weight, so being over-hungry 3 days a week is not helping my diet!

Protein is not really lost during dialysis because of it's molecular weight (size is too large). But amino acids (they make up protein) are small enough to in fact be dialyzed out during hemo. As for drinking a protein mix during dialysis, I don't think the protein breaks down so fast as to release the amino acids during the treatment, but I may be wrong on that point.
jbeany, I also take my vitamins after hemodialysis (water soluble vitamins are also dialyzed out--but not fat soluble such as Vit-E) as well as drink another protein shake (for the 500 calories) when I get home.
Protein does tend to make people feel full ...sometimes. So drinking it after arriving home may help. The other thing is to have five small meals a day.
-
I am guessing a handful of M&Ms does not make for a small meal?
-
In terms of carbs and fat, yes, m&m's have enough to count for a meal! ;D
-
Also, in another post BigSky suggested that adding more fiber to your diet will help you feel more full.

I´m on home hemo and i am allowed to eat while on dialysis, which i do on a regular basis....and I drink also...
