Title: Dialysis is rough
Post by: lanemn9 on March 01, 2009, 08:57:17 AM
the other day I went for an extra run to help pull a little fluid off and I paid for it I only ran 2 1/2 hours and things were good and they came to unhook me and she pulled the last needle and it hit me I was so dizzy the room was spinning.
I said holy crap and she quickly laid me back in my chair and my BP took a huge noise dive and I almost passed out they
had to stick a needle my in to get more fluid back in me.I hurt I cramped had a headache they pulled way to much fluid
I'm not sure if half them techs know how to do math never the less I'm not looking forward to going back but it's my life and I hate dialysis

Yep.  as we say here, its healthier to gove the headaches than to reciecve them.  Don't let them do the math, you tell them what to take off.

Have you looked at NxStage?

I agree with Wallyz! Always do your own Math. Multiple times I had techs who would ask me if their subtraction was correct and it WASN'T! So I started telling them exactly how much to pull off.

I agree wholeheartedly.  Five years ago I very specifically asked that no more than 1.5 be pulled off.  They set the machine at 3 without telling me, and when I went shopping afterward I passed out in the store.  Not fun.

Hubby always did his own math and checked the machine to see how much they were taking off. If it wasn't right he told them!!!

yep they are human and make mistakes. I always double check for myself (though these days they usually just ask me "how much?" or we do the math together to be sure). I always am very sure to have the machine facing me so I can check the numbers myself just in case.

I also like to do a UF profile as I find it personally easier to take off more at the start and less at the end - I find it helps a lot specially if I need to take off a bit more than normal. My body can cope with larger amounts off at the start. I like UF profile 6 myself....

I have been losing weight and it is now a crap shoot as to how much they take off.

I've had the same problem, kit.  I always figure if I made it 3 runs without even feeling lightheaded, take off an extra .2.  Rinse and repeat. . . .  It's worked pretty well for me.

Ianemn9, I feel for ya. The exact same thing happened to me on Saturday, only with vomiting added. Mine wasn't fluid related though, just too much of an increase in my blood pressure medication a few days before. I hope they get things straightened out soon.

Excellent idea!   :thumbup;

Yep, I always go over the numbers and the amount of fluid to take off, before starting each session.

Suggestion:  Maybe we ought to put together some common-sense rules of thumb like this, for all newcomers to IHD.com:  Always go over the fluid numbers with your nurse before starting the session; always make sure the nurse tightened the caps on your dialysis catheter at the end of the session; (I just got caught on that one!);  etc.
