I keep seeing the other post "Ignorant things people have said to you".
How about good advice, or encouraging stuff, surely some of you have been told things that were really helpful. or amazing advice you have been given. and it doesn't just have to be dialysis related just useful life advice ???.
??? ??? :-\

Great idea for a thread, however lets keep it dialysis related or we will have to move this thread to Off-Topic. :) In fact I think this would be a great Off-Topic thread.
-
sorry epoman, how do we move it off topic. I forgot :P ??? 8)

You know what? With recent events that have taken place I think this is perfect and just what we needed!! Thank you for this!!
here is good advice my mom has told me:
- Not everyone has to like you! Just be YOURSELF!
- Always talk things out! If you are too mad to talk without trying to hurt the other person, write it out and read it later! Give yourself time to think about how you feel before you blast the other person!
- Always try to put yourself in the other person's shoes! Life is not always greener on the other side once you have to mow their lawn ...

I've heard something similar...before you judge someone, walk a mile in their shoes. Then you'll be a mile away AND have their shoes. LOL ;D

Probably the oldest and most unused advice. The GOLDEN RULE.
Do unto others as you would want done unto you.( Treat others the way you would like to be treated)

"Never Give Up!"
"Don't talk about death, I've got too much life to live, To many orders to give.^^"
"I'ma live my life until the last sin, then resurrect through the birth of my son and live again.^^"
"I hope to go to Heaven but I got friends in both places"
"The grass is not, in fact, always greener on the other side of the fence. Fences have nothing to do with it. The grass is greenest where it is watered. When crossing over fences, carry water with you and tend the grass wherever you may be."
I don't know where they got it from but I thought some were funny and some helpful

When you are going through hell keep on walking.
You are one hell of an example to others.
If you are going to be worried every time the universe does not make sense you are going to be worried every moment everyday for the rest of your life. spoken by G'Kar on Babylon5 TV show
Courage does not always roar, sometimes it is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying :"I will try again tomorrow."

Life is not the destination, it's the journey.

Duck!
Run!
Get by.
Move it.
Slow down you are going too fast.
Speed up you are going too slow.
Light a fire under your butt.
Put the fire out all the way.
Only you can prevent forest fires (Smokey the Bear)
Look!
See!
I love you!

My favorite quote. Don't worry about tomorrow. God is already there.
-
This too shall pass...
Be kind, everyone is fighting a battle...
Listen to the right voices, so you can make the right choices...
You must look at what's left, not at what's lost...
Stability in the storm comes not from seeking a new message, but from understanding an old one.
The most reliable anchor points are not recent discoveries, but are time-tested truths that have held their ground against the winds of change.Truths like:
My life is not futile.
My failures are not fatal.
You can never get to the right place on the wrong road.

I found those out the hard way as well! When I was a teenager! I wasn't naked but I had a low cut, thin night gown on with no robe! This was all in the same day too! :rofl; :rofl;

From a friends dad when I was abt 19. "Don't leave a pot full of screamin' hot oil and french fries on the stove cooking and go outside to smoke a cigarette & talk on the phone." This was after I asked what had happened to the cabinets in the kitchen. They were all burnt! He got the fire out before it took over the entire kitchen but the front of the cabinets were all charred. Lucky for him they had fire extinguisher nearby!
"Remember to blow the pilot light on the furnace out and shut off the gas before re-tiling the kitchen floor!" When I was 6, our neighbors hired people from their church who didn't know what they were doing and weren't licensed or bonded! When the glue fumes ignited it sounded like an explosion. The fire caught our house on fire too but the fire dept. got ours out with minimal damage. The neighbors house burned to the ground.

One saying that helped me a lot was one I got directly from a older patient when I first started dialysis
He said to me "If you can beat it here *pointing to his head* then the rest is easy"
It was not especially eloquent but I have found it to be very true

Suicidal Tendencies (my fav band) have a song called "No F*** Problem" which contains the line "You aint alive, if you aint living" - sounds fair to me! But more than that, their song "The Feeling's Back" is one that I find really positive. I posted the lyrics in that thread for song lyrics, whatever it was called.... it must be in this Off Topic section somewhere.

Be here now.

The two that I try to live by from the Canadian Forces Principles of Leadership:
Lead by example.
Know your subordinates and promote their welfare
I find these to be the 2 most important traits of any leader in any line of work.
And another personal fav of mine is that if you can't laugh or find humour, then there is no sense in living.

I was passing by a little church building where they were having a meeting. I heard the preacher say this and I was so impressed by the truth of it. He said:
"De big-word man can understan' big words and small words. De small-word man can only understan' small words. So use small words, and both de big-word man and de small-word man will understan' "

From my father during one of our many, many trips back and forth to the University of Iowa Hospital following my 2nd transplant:
Don't walk around with your chin dragging on the ground. There are many people in your life who will ask you how you're doing. You know who your true friends are. If you want, share your feelings with them but for everyone else, just put a smile on your face and tell them you're doing just fine. You'll earn a lot more respect for your good attitude than if you regale any and everyone with all of your woes.
Most people ask how you're doing out of politeness or because it's become a habit (Hey, how you doin'?) and don't really expect an answer.
