Sutter shutters money-losing outpatient dialysis centers
Sacramento Business Journal - by Kathy Robertson Staff writer

Faced with the high cost of running out-of-date dialysis centers in a market where patients have other choices, Sutter Health expects to close its two local outpatient centers by mid-March.

The move is expected to save between $500,000 and $1 million a year.

The 160 patients getting treatment at the centers on Alhambra Boulevard and South Land Park Drive were notified this week. Sutter is working to find alternate placements for them and the 45 employees who could lose their jobs.

Sutter’s action is not related to the current economic downturn; the Sacramento-based health system has tried to sell the business for two years. Planning for a possible shutdown started in November, when it was clear there wasn’t a buyer, said Diane Stewart, Sutter’s local chief administrative officer for mental health and continuing care.
