Title: Technical Aspects of Renal Transplantation
Post by: pelagia on January 16, 2009, 11:10:26 AM
I happened across this book chapter today while searching for something else.  The link is to a pdf.  It's full of pictures of the various steps of a transplant and diagrams of how they are hooked up to blood vessels and the ureter.  Don't look at it while you are eating!

Here's another useful reference site/publication relating to transplantation.  According to the website,  "Organ Transplantation: Concepts, Issues, Practice, and Outcomes" is the first full text nursing book on organ transplantation to be published electronically.  You will have to give them some information before they will let you see the content, but it is open access.

I was looking specifically for information on where a transplant is placed in the body relative to the body cavity and one of the chapters has an {almost} understandable discussion about where a transplant is placed relative to the peritoneum, intestines, etc. and why.  We've pondered over the right/left question before and the answer can be found in this chapter:

Happy reading!

Mine is also on the left.  My surgeon said he preferred the left and I said "Go for it.  I want YOU comfortable!"

Mine was placed on the right.... because I'm right handed... Just kidding that has nothing to do with it.
