Title: amputation of right leg
Post by: jm3 on January 03, 2009, 02:33:44 PM
Hi, I am writing on behalf of my father who is  in the hospital right now. He needs to have his right leg below the knee amputated soon. He has been in the hospital since Dec. 2, 2008. They started with removal of his big toe, then they removed half of his foot. The doctor says the foot is rejecting the surgical skin they placed over the foot. He is in a weakened condition from being in the hospital. I am extremely concerned about his recovery from this amputation. He  also has heart disease, kidney failure( he has been on dialysis for 4 years. If anybody has any insight please let me know.  Thanks Jeanmarie

:welcomesign; to IHD.  Is your Dad a diabetic?  I don't have any insights for you, but we do have members here who have had first hand experience with amputation.  I'm sure you'll hear from them in time.

Welcome.....look for a clinic or surgeon who specializes in wounds...we went to a clinic in the Charlotte area several years ago and saw a wound specialist and he was able to stop the rejection of the surgical skin and stopped further amputation..he did a certain surgery where he had to scrape the wound including bone etc.  Good luck with this.

My husband had similar problems with his amputation almost three years ago. They scraped the wound area and put a wound vac on it for twelve weeks.  It has healed fairly well. Get to a wound treatment facility pretty quick.
