Title: Sex after transplant
Post by: kellyt on December 26, 2008, 09:51:50 AM
Okay, I was just reading the "Sex while on dialysis" thread and it modivated me to ask my question regarding "sex after transplant".

I'm almost 7 weeks out and I feel great!  Physically I know having sex won't be an issue.  My concern (and question) is that I'm doing the CMV IVIG treatments and I'm wondering if my husband should use a condom until I'm done with the treatments?  He's had a vasectomy, so that's not an issue.  I'm just wondering if we should take extra precautions until the IVIG stuff is done?

I'd check with your doctor, but my take on it is that you will be sharing germs with your spouse anyways, and so their clean practices arre about your spouse not getting infected, because if they are, you will be too.

Now, if he has  a cold, I would hold off until he is recovered, but that goes for kissing, holding hands and other contact as well

I asked the transplant clinic folks and our primary care physician about this following Stephen's transplant.  The answer I got from both sources is that Stephen has already been exposed to all of my germs, so intimacy is not an issue. I was worried because I occasionally get a little cold sore on my mouth and Stephen has never gotten one (33 years of exposure).  Apparently even this isn't an issue as he has already have built up immunity or resistance long ago.  If you catch something new, they recommend avoiding contact.   But, even with that, I have had two colds this fall, including sore throat and cough and Stephen did not get sick.

So it should be okay without protection?   I will definitely check with my transplant doctor, as well.  Thanks so much for both of your responses!

I've gotten cold sores my entire life.  My husband had never had one, but since being married to me he's had maybe three, but never at the same time as me or even shortly after.  His have been at just random times.  I haven't had a cold sore in a few months.  I'm not looking forward to my first one post-transplant.  Even if it just lasts one day longer than normal THAT'S TOO LONG!

Thanks again!

I looked that treatment up again.  From the manufacturer's website "CytoGam® (cytomegalovirus immune globulin intravenous (human)) (CMV-IVIG) is an intravenous immune globulin enriched in antibodies against cytomegalovirus..."  Presumably this is making your body better able to fight off CMV and not making you more susceptible to anything.  This is where we could use a few thoughts from Stauff...

I wa looking at the binder book my transplant center gave me and on the section of sex, it states to wait at least 6 weeks post transplant and to use protection. However it doesn't say if this is for married couples or not. I would think it would just better to be safe than sorry if you do decide to since your stillon your honymoon with your transplant. Once your medications are tapered off and settled down after the one year mark, then ummm hat's off. :shy;

Then again I'm not married or dating, so I might be being over cautious  and not wanting to put the kidney at risk. So go ahead and enjoy life while you can. Just wait till your off the IV line like they said in the "Sex While On Dialysis" thread.

        Kelly,  YOu probably won't get a cold sore taking the IVIG.  That's an antiviral, and the cold sore is a virus.  One benefit!!! :clap;

I saw this thread and had to comment.  It made me think of the old joke about the pt asking the doctor if he would be able to play the piano after surgery.  And the doc saying "sure", then the pt saying, Great...because I couldn't before!
Sex after transplant?!?!  Wooohooooo  where's the line?   :shy;

If you weren't getting any before the transplant, does this mean you automatically get some?  :clap;
