Hi All.
What a wonderful site you have here, I am honored to be among you! My name is Vicki, I graduated to 50 yrs old last week....hate to use the term "turned" sounds a lot like spoiled milk! I have a wacky sense of humor and love to learn and share information. I hope to be able to offer as much support as I gain from the group.
On to the details ( as well as I can remember them). I had my right kidney removed at the ripe old age of 4 (1963), my left kidney had lower function, but my parents were assured at the time that I could live a normal life with the one. I suffered what was diagnosed at the time as AKF at 17, medications and lifestyle changes reversed the failure, but things got worse as time went on. Fast forward to 2006...my neph first talked to me about kidney failure and the possibility that I would need a transplant. For the next year they poked, prodded, tested and took more bodily fluids from me than I thought I had. I was listed for transplant July 2007. I at first was scared, sad and feeling very mortal for the first time in my life. Dialysis was creeping up on me and the thought of HD was the worst. Sept 2008 my neph and I had the fistula discussion and with all my research I had decided to go with PD to try to retain some sort of normal daily routine. We set up an appointment to begin training and get the port for November 2008.
I am normally not lucky, but this this time a higher power looked down on me. October 24th, 2008 before the sun came up I got the call and received a new kidney that day. I'm still new to this..so all I can really say is that it was a 3/6 match and I am eternally grateful to the donor and their family. I suffered antibody rejection on day three after surgery and underwent 12 sessions of plasmapheresis, doses of steroids that made me resemble a jack o lantern. BUT a happy, smiling, jack o lantern.
I just got my BEST blood test results yesterday....creatine of 1.5!! I've been doing the happy dance ever since they told me!
Sorry to ramble. Bless you all. Just reading these posts has taught me more than any other site I have visited.

Hi Vicki,
Ohhh you'll fit right in with the wacky sense of humor then. You haven't seen what we have done or the stares we have caused during get together meetings :rofl; Never plan a meeting near a mental institution. :rofl; :rofl; :rofl;
