Title: jumbled speech
Post by: vikki ross on December 03, 2008, 05:43:57 AM
Hi, i am new to the site... I am hoping someone can put my mind at rest.  My dad has been on dialysis for 2 years now... Just recently his speech has been effected after a hemodialysis session, the words become jumbled... He has had tests and its not a stroke, but as yet we haven't had any reason for it... has anyone ever had this or something similar? could it be linked to blood pressure, or when they take too much fluid?
Hoping someone can help
x

Wish I could help you. I know the only times Dustin's speech was like stuck on one word was when he was getting ready to have a seizure. He never experienced that after dialysis. There are many wonderful ppl on here that I am sure will respond.

When he first started dialysis my Dad would sometimes come home and not be able to speak and I clearly remember one night when he was so bad we thought he'd had a stroke and called the GP - it wasn't a stroke, there was nothing he could find wrong with him.  It all changed when they adjusted his dry weight - seems they had been taking too much fluid. He's still sometimes too tired to say much (he is 80)  but that's another issue.  Hope this helps.

I, too, don't have an answer for you, but I'm sure someone will be able to help!  God Bless your Dad.  I hope this gets worked through quickly!   :cuddle;

Thank you to you all for your replies!

I do think its linked to his dry weight, I think that are taking too much off each session... and its effecting his blood pressure.......

Its so frustrating when you don't know what your dealing with.... but honestly i really appreciate your messages

thanks

hey vikki ross.  Welcome to the site. Exactly the same thing happened to my Dad.  After every dialysis session he got his words jumbled.  His doctors told him that when you are older and you take a lot of fluid off it is really exhausting and the brain doesn't think quite as quickly so the words come out jumbled.  Sometimes as in Rose1999 father's case not at all.  Even though my father had had a number of strokes they never considered that because they were so use to seeing it as exhaustion in the older people. I know it is very distressing when it happens but usually fixed with a good sleep. Love to you and your Dad at Christmas. xxx
