Hi everyone,

I'm new to the IHD website and would like to introduce myself.  I've been on dialysis for a bit over 2 and 1/2 years.  I lost my kidney function due to AA amyloidosis which is a rare disease that deposits amyloid protein in varies organs as it has in my kidneys (and GI tract, thyroid and liver).  I started doing PD but switched to hemodialysis in January 2007.  I go to a clinic near my home three times a week and manage there all right.  I've had some complications and other difficulties because of the amyloidosis so I am pretty short on stamina and energy but I do like to keep busy as much as possible.  I still quilt with my group usually weekly, read, do puzzles and spend time with my husband, family and friends.  I have a wonderful support system of friends and church members and am truly blessed to have them in my life.  Before I quit working, I was a microbiologist for 20 years and had a wonderful career where I did very interesting research, traveled quite a lot and met many people from around the world.  I miss the people but not the stress of the work.

Oh, and Shadow is my almost 5 year old Alaskan Malamute dog.  She's a little gimpy now, too as she recently had surgery for a blown out ACL.  My poor husband has to take care of both of us!

Hope to learn some new things about dialysis as well as AA amyloidosis from this message board.  Thanks for the opportunity.

 :welcomesign; Shadows Mom,  We are very glad to have you here.  It is amazing how many different reasons for kidney failure; thank you for explaining yours.  You seem to have a great attitude and are continuing on with your life.   I love Malamutes!  My Mom had several and always named them for Alaskan cities.  Sitka was my favorite.  Hope yours is recovering well.   Bless you husband's heart---he is busy taking care of everyone!   This is an amazing support group; we really care about each other.  There is also more information here that any doctors office.   Thanks for sharing your story.  I look forward to hearing more from you   :grouphug;

 :welcomesign; Shadows Mom.

Glad you joined us.  Just last night, I watched a show where this lady had Amyloidosis and it took the doctors six months to figure it out.

I am Mom to Ella and Sierra.  Ella Mae is an English Cocker Spaniel (in the picture). My hubby calls her Ellie hence the name under the pic.  Sierra is a Siberian Husky.  Black and white with blue eyes--beautiful dog and actually my son's dog, but we keep her.

Hope to see your posts.
