Title: Greetings from Dan the EMT
Post by: emt.dan on November 09, 2008, 08:03:33 PM
Hey all, I'm Dan, an EMT in the Boston, MA area.
I work for a private ambulance service that serves many dialysis patients. We have several who we transport from short- and long-term nursing facilities, many from home, and some who bounce between hospitals and home.
I have grown to know and love many of my six-time-weekly patients-- being able to see their relative highs and lows is a very interesting process. Although I can come nowhere close to understanding what your struggles are, I feel I am in a unique position to see the impact of dialysis and ESRD on my patient's lives and support them in whatever way possible.
To you, I want to counter the negative associations you have with ambulances and EMTs-- not only for routine transport, but also for the emergencies that you likely encounter.

 :welcomesign;

I had my first ambulance ride ever when I had to be moved from first to 2nd hospital and it was the best experience ever...in a case like this that is.  Very professional and very kind people.

Dan, my family has had much experience with ambulances. Four times in the month of September alone (my mom). I have the utmost respect for EMTs. I found that every one of them even beat some of the ER doctors in knowledge and, of course, bedside manner. Welcome.

:welcomesign; Dan!   First, let me say, you are a hero to all of us.  Many times, you are the first medical people we see in an emergency.  Thank you for dedicating your life to this profession.  So-- now on with the welcome!  So very glad you joined.  We love professionals to come here and ask questions.  It means you really care about your patients.  It sounds like you treat yours with respect and dignity.  I think that is what we all want.  We are scared, our loved ones are scared so it helps to have a calm, comforting person who is going to take care of us.    I think you will receive lots of good answers from the members.  Post often. We can learn from you, too.

Some of the best, kindest, most dedicated, most intelligent, most caring people Marvin has met in his 14 years of dialysis have been EMTs.  I respect you and admire you for what you do; I know that I couldn't do it.  Welcome to IHD.

Welcome Dan. Its nice to welcome another EMT. I volunteered as an EMT for 7 years... until earlier this year when I had to give it up. I can't lift anymore... and an EMT who can't lift can't run on an ambulance.

Welcome to our community, Dan the EMT!  I have nothing but respect for the EMTs at our hospital here in the British Virgin Islands.  So I am happy to welcome you to our IHD family  :grouphug;  You have impressed me, since I think someone has to really care about patients to join a website like this.  So keep reading and keep posting.  Tell us some of the experiences you have had with dialysis patients.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
