Title: Did my first night with single needle!

Well I did my first night last night with the single needle double pump, and I had not one problem, no alarms nothing...still did't sleep good though.  I have to say is it ever nice having only one needle in, I was much more comfortable..

I will keep you posted, but tonight is my night off, so I go back on Sunday night.

That's fantastic Jay.  I'm hoping that the more uneventful nights you have, the more relaxed you'll get and the better the sleeps will become.  Go Jay go.   :cheer:

Sorry it has been a while since Ihave been on, but it is great!!!  There were some bumps when I first started but now it is great, much easier to sleep with one needle, and of course, less pain.  I am so glad I decided to do nocturnal and single needle.

Are the clearances as good?

I am on PD.... but I am always learning for what might be my future.

Wattle hubby has been on nocturnal for 2 1/2 years and clearance are fantastic.  With the long slow treatment there is no need for binders for phosphorus anymore because more phos is removed. Hubby's blood work has ben pretty close to "normal" ever since he started nocturnal.

I need to do single needle but no one in the United States does it as far as I can tell.

My clearances aregreat, pretty much the same as having a kidney.  I am having a problem with heamoglobin but that has nothing to do with the nocturnal and single needle.

Single needles are approved for US via NxStage. Machine has to run very slow, think its 200-250 so its used only for nocturnal. It was approved about 9 months ago.

They're used in Canada too.  We have Baxter AK96 as a home machine.  My husband does nocturnal home hemo.  His doc's encourage the single needle method but his nurses control the training and they don't want him to do that.  So far he has taken the nurses advice mainly because the sessions required with single needle are too long.

From what I understand the single needle spends half its time drawing blood and half its time pushing blood (rotates every few seconds).  So the clearance on an 8 hour single needle would be equal to a 4 hour session with regular needles/catheter.

Right now he is doing ok with 6 hour nocturnal sessions with his catheter and getting about 18 hours a week.

Are you using the 14ga single needle within a needle system, or a system that uses a more conventional single needle and has to/from blood lines running to the needle?
