hi, my name is jen and i am 32 and have been on HDialysis since April 2008. I was diagnosed with diabetes when i was twelve andi guess i can safely say that my uncompliance with a proper diabetic lifestyle is what caused my kidneys to fail....( i enjoyed being thin more than taking my insulin...yep- i was one of those with diabetic bulimia...smart, huh?)anyway...i went to westchester med center to meet with a transplant team in January and since august i have been placed on the transplant list. So far, my father and both brothers have been tested; they werent perfect matches( equally in fact- with my bros being perfect matches for each other) so i leave my fate to the list i suppose...my mother has not been tested, i think shes worried that if she is in fact a match she wont ever be able to meet the medical requirements needed to give me her kidney. i think the scariest part of all of this was meeting with Dr. Buttts(yeah- i giggled too). he seems like a very caring doctor, but he told me that the prognosis of a diabetic on dialysis was 10 years......but as of now i take each day with my fiance as it comes. were quite the couple- he and i. Right after i was told i would need a transplant in jan. he herniated two disks in his lower back at work in feb., which spirlled into a workmans comp nightmare.. but thats has finally been resolved but his back , well, i suppose its better... but it seems like his back will never be the same... but we have each other, and we take turns taking care of each other.. its kindof become a joke among friends.. we have both been told we need helmets and to live in protective bubbles( did i mention how hes adventuous and im accident prone{dang neuropathy}) so, i guess thats pretty much were im at now...nice to meet you all...

Welcome to IHD. Usually transplant people gain weight, so just be prepared. I'd rather be a little chubby and feel good and be free of the machine. Best of luck.

Welcome Jen. Glad to have you with us. I think now that you know he importance of keeping to the diets and restrictions you'll do much better - as sucky as it is - but you've learned the hardest of hard ways how important it is. It sounds like you could well get transplanted from one of your siblings though? I mean you don't need a perfect match for a living donation to work out just fine so hopefully that's something that can be explored.
Anyway again welcome to IHD!
