Hey ..
This might sound like a stupid question but i noticed that some patient have not grown and developed properly. I was wondering why they stay small, even after a transplant.. and the reason why they didn't grow in the first place.
Has anyone had this experience??? and is it true i might shrink?

Please read this thread: http://ihatedialysis.com/forum/index.php?topic=411.0 and reply that you have read it and understood it. All I ask is members try, well you did not even try. If you read your post it makes NO sense. 8 mistakes in one sentence is blatant disregard and is totally unacceptable. ::)

well i have been told that children wont grow like everyone else if they have kidney disease at a young age.

That is true. Remember that little black kid on "Differrent Strokes"?? Gary Coleman?? He was a kidney kid. I think he has had a couple of transplants and is back on dialysis.
Your kidneys do SO much more than just filter out toxins and fluids.

Well my parents are both six feet tall, my sisters are 5'8"and 5'9" tall; however I am 5'4" tall. What happened? Probably kidney disease.

oh i never new that guy from different strokes had kidney disease... that would explain it.

I am not that big, I'm 1,60m that's 5,24 feet. When I go to the movies I have to show ID^^.
So yes Kidney failure does effect growth since the kidneys produce the growth hormones or so I heard. From my 12 birthday to my 17 I had to give myself a growth hormone shot.

That is true.
My guess is it would have to do with the affect of how kidney failure screws with the bodies hormones and the loss of protein.

Cause some bone in my hand was fully grown so it wouldn't be good to keep giving me growth hormones since I could get a tumor from it or something like that

I grew up in the Hospital for Sick Kids in Toronto and was surrounded by kids with renal disease. So many of us had transplants while still in the children's hospital and I remember some were so small I didn't realize they were teenagers. One girl I honestly thought was only 8 years old .. turns out she was 16. I remember thinking "I never want to be too short because what boy would like me?" I was 16 as well but I was lucky enough to be 5'3" by that time.
I only grew 2 more inches after my transplant because I was noncompliant and didn't take my Cyclosporine which also stunts your growth.

My Brother 6' 6"
My Mom 5' 2"
Me 5' 11"
So I believe my growth was stunted, because at 21 when I started, the docs said I need dialysis 6-8 years ago. To bad my parents were to busy fighting to notice "hey why is our son tired all the time and lacks energy and has these bumps on his arms?" Thanks mom and dad. ::)
Now even shorter because of this damn wheelchair. >:(

Yes kidney problems can stunt your growth, but genetics come into it too.
In our family we all tend to be on the short side with my brother and late grandfather bucking the trend - my brother is 6'4", my late grandfather was over 6' too.
My dad was 5'7". My mum 5'. I am 5'1", my daughter is 5'3" and Ian (Shades-Elfen) is 5'4". Ian's father (my ex-husband) was the tallest in his family at 5'8", his father was only 4'11" (no kidney problems in his side of the family), so I think there is a large element of genetics at work too.

Much like Angie I had kidney problems as a small child and knew many other patients that had very stunted growth. Since your kidney's produce growth hormones, it affects us all a little different based as the actual problem the kidney is having and at what point in development the problem occurred. I, myself am average height, but look like I'm 12. They didn't try to replace the lost growth hormones until I was 14, which was a little late. . . But I'm told one day I will appreciate it. I'm almost 30 and don't appreciate it yet ... :)

Yes. Especially if you are on Prednisone. Bone deterioration. I use to be 5'1 and now I'm barley 4'11. I'm going to be one of those short little old ladies that people point at and say "isn't she cute." >:(

Ha ha thats so true.
I started dialysis when i was 22 so i believe i already did most of my growing. But last week i came back from the doctors and i grew 4cm since being on dialysis.......... i was so proud :) ;D

Now if only my legs would grow :( I have the legs of a short person :-[
