This weekend I was down in southern Indiana visiting some friends. They live out in the country, so we always shoot our guns when I'm down there. The nearest house is maybe five or six hundred feet from our target area, and that's more than the minimum distance for our shooting to be legal (we even spoke to the sheriff himself to make sure it was legal). The people who live there have never liked our shooting because of the noise, but we had the sheriff talk to them and he informed them that as long as we weren't shooting at night, we had the right to shoot. So, Saturday afternoon, we were out shooting my .22 rifle, which isn't really that loud, and suddenly we heard yelling, followed by two gunshots. We looked around, and there was the neighbour walking toward us holding a shotgun. He had fired it in the air over our heads, so neither of us were hit, but we so easily could have been. He yelled threats at us, and then went back to his house. I had my 9mm semiautomatic pistol in my holster, and I was ready to pull it out and return fire if he kept shooting. After he went in, we went into the house and called the cops. Four cop cars pulled up, both state and local, and we gave them the full story, and showed where we had been shooting. After they finished questioning us (in a very polite way), they went to question the neighbours, but they were not quite as friendly with them. Several cops went up to the house with their own shotguns aimed at the door. They questioned the neighbours and confiscated the shotgun. We didn't see whether or not they were arrested at that time, although I'm sure that at least the man was because he was the shooter and it was his shotgun. I know he will at least be charged with reckless use of a firearm, and possibly assault with a deadly weapon. My friends are also going to get a restraining order so if the neigbours even so much as fart in their direction, they could be arrested. This is the closest I've ever come to being shot and/or having to shoot someone in defense. Sheesh!

Other than this one incident, I had a really good time. According to my friend's grandmother who owns the property, there have been problems before with this particular neighbour, but he is pretty much all bark and no bite. In this case the "barking" took on the sound of a shotgun. He was not trying to hit us or anything, but the shotgun pellets obviously had to come down somewhere, and they could have hit someone when they came down. The dude just needs to know that "shotgun justice" isn't going to work. I'm not a violent person, and neither is my friend. However, we each have 9mm law enforcement pistols, and if we ever had to, we would use those pistols in self defense. I pray we never have to, but that is a very last resort. We're hoping that having several police shotguns pointed at his face taught him a lesson. We're not going to let him ruin our time. It is usually very peaceful and quiet there (except the VERY RARE times when we shoot), and my friend and his wife love living there. Letting him "win" simply is not an option.

That is scary, Adam!
I had a friend in high school who was hit with a bullet that was shot into the air at New Year's. The shooter wasn't even on the same land as my friend. I forget how far away, but the bullet shattered his elbow.

That sucks! Glad you wasn't hit, or had to return fire >:(

Oh my God Adam. What the hell is the matter with people anymore. I'm glad that you and your friend are alright and hope the police did something stronger then a warning to the ass that fired into the air. Just stupid in my mind. :cuddle;

Adam, you have a very adventure-filled life! Be safe!

Wow!! Scary! Some people have no common sense. Glad you were not hurt!

Crazy liberals trying to infringe on your second amendment rights.. Wait a minute, sorry , got confused there. :2thumbsup;
Glad you are Ok. If heard of that before, people trying to scare off people shooting near their property by shooting at them. It always sounds like they didn't think that through very carefully.
