Title: Introduction from a Dialysis Daughter
Post by: teverman on October 23, 2008, 07:21:29 AM
Wow-not sure where to start so here goes.  I have been lurking and reading for almost a year now. :o   My name is Tina I'm 46 and I am here for my mom who is 74.  We are not sure when the kidney failure started but she has had diabetes for about 8 years now.  In December of 06 her doctor of over 40 years retired and she was sent to a new doctor.  Right away the new doctor picked up on her high creatin level.  :oops; She was sent to the nephologist and began with iron shots and watching her diet.  By the end of 07 the doctor started talking about getting a fistula because her numbers were getting worse. She ended up in congestive heart failure in January and again in February.  She had her fistula placed March 08.  It was working great and she didn't need to started dialysis right away.  April and May were good months.  We went on vacation the end of June, the day we came back she ended up in the hospital with chf.  She still didn't want to start dialysis.  The end of July she had a heart attack.  They wanted to do dialysis right away-they found out her fistula wasn't working so they put in a cath.  :banghead; Two days of dialsys in the hospital then in center for 3 and a half hours M-W-F.  First cath got infected after 2 weeks had to have a new one.  Then a balloon surgery to fix the fistula that didn't work.  Two weeks ago she had a graft placed in her upper arm. She will start to use that next week.  She is so scared.

Sorry this is so long but if I hadn't been reading this site I would not have know what questions to ask and how to go about everything.  :yahoo; She keeps asking me-how do you know all this stuff-you guys are great.  I feel much more confident knowing everything I do from here and what to expect. :bow;

Tina and Mom, welcome to IHD.  Your Mom is starting out dialysis the usual way.  Lots of surgeries and catheters.  Things will settle down.

Keep reading this site, and ask questions.        :welcomesign;

Tina, That was a wonderful introduction.  Your mother is very fortunate to have a daughter who care so much.  I am thrilled you have found answers here, but I am really excited you decided to join.  As you can tell, we are very supportive of each other.  We really do care.   Your Mom has been dealing with so many things.  Please let her know we are here for both of you.   Welcome to our family!! :grouphug;

Welcome to our community, Tina!  I was very moved reading your account.  What especially made me tear up a bit is the following quote from you.  This is the exact reason why Epoman started this site - to empower people- "Knowledge is Power!"  He always made it clear that we can not leave it all up to the professionals.  And this is how this site helps.
Sorry this is so long but if I hadn't been reading this site I would not have know what questions to ask and how to go about everything.  :yahoo; She keeps asking me-how do you know all this stuff-you guys are great.  I feel much more confident knowing everything I do from here and what to expect. :bow;
