Title: newbie
Post by: sumorcheda on August 15, 2006, 12:48:15 AM
hi, i am an angry newbie. why am i angry? i will tell you... i was a new hire for davita and basically got a bum deal. My training was poor and was basically thrown on the floor without adequate training. I had complained to the facility administrator regarding being placed on the floor without all of my clinical competencies being signed off. Well, i had a few personal problems with my car breaking down and since my facility was quite a distance from my home i had problems getting to work. well i had to call in several times due to transportation problems and that was the reason for my discharge, however i had never been written up or given a verbal warning. The facility admin stated that the employment was "At Will" and therefore the termination is justified. does anyone think i have a case for unlawful termination? I think that it was retaliation due to me complaining about my training.

Hi Sumorcheda,  Welcome to the site.  Thank you for introducing yourself and putting your gender by your Avatar.  WOW, what a deal.  I'm not sure how DaVita works for employment, but you would think that you would have an "opportunity to improve" and you would agree and sign to it.  There is a section here for Dialysis Workers to vent and ask questions.  You may get some response here, and you were right to introduce yourself first, but you may get more response to your question over there.  A couple of workers on this site have quit DaVita.

:D thank you for the response, but no i was not given a chance to sign anything. i really enjoyed my job despite the long hours on my feet. another thing that i didn't mention is that my boss had recently acquired a few nurses from the Philippines, they were not ready to hit the floor because all of their paperwork was not in but i wasn't going to take long therefore he could afford to let an nurse go without just cause.

Hi Sumorcheda,  Man, hearing that and being a former patient of davita hemo, makes me wonder exactly who they are hiring and what qualifications they must have.  Thank goodness when i was incenter all my nurses were awesome (with the exception of a few) :-\   But you would think they would see your willingness and determination and give you the chance to prove yourself.  Alot of nurses and techs hate their jobs and it shows on their faces but it's just a paycheck to them,  you do find some that enjoy helping us (such as yourself) and sadly to say, those are the ones that never stick around, now i know why. :-\  I hope everything works out for you and i am very glad you found us.  oh, and Welcome aboard ;)

;) Thank you Angie. Are you a dialysis nurse or a patient? If you are a nurse do you have any suggestions on how i could go further with a career in dialysis. i know that you are in Canada and i am in the states but any encouraging words would do.

I am young. I first was on dialysis when I was 16 but only for 2 months as I had a transplant. It lasted 11 years  ;D

Btw, thanks for the complement .. saying I look young ;) I am 32! That pic was taken just this year! I just started Hemo last summer. And my fistula is still quite new as they had been using my catheter all this time!

:-* do you plan on gettin another transplant? I know from one of my patients that the anti-rejection medications are horrible. my pt told me that he would rather continue to come to dialysis 3x a week as opposed to getting another transplant.

Everyone's experience is different and no one can ever go by anyone else's experience! I learned that from being in hospitals so much. Also they tend to tell you more in simple terms when  you grow up in a children's hospital ;)

The side effects were bad .. but mostly because it seems everyone shelters you from the truth! That is one thing I love about Epoman's site is that he encourages honesty! The side effects were only bad to me since I was a teenaged girl and suddenly I gain 32 lbs in 28 days and have acne worse than anyone's ever seen, both due to the Prednisone! And also had really noticeable stretchmarks on my legs that were darker due to the Cyclosporine, that everyone seemed to notice and ask about! And I was in a Catholic high school wearing kilts :(

Looking back, it wasn't so bad that it wouldn't be worth getting another. I am older now and less worried about appearances ;) I don't even cover my fistula arm .. of course it is mainly just realize bruised and not that big .. yet.

:-* well i am sure that your life experiences have made you a very strong person. Seeing the many pt's at my past employment, i know that anybody and i do mean anybody can become a renal failure pt. I will have another job in dialysis. When i get it everyone on this message board will be the first to know.

Oh yes, I have a lot of dialysis pics there (PD and HD) as I am a moderator there ;)
But that site is more of a medical site full of dialysis-related news and run mainly by Dialysis Nurses. Glad you found it :)
Probably a good place to talk to nurses :)
