Hi everyone!
I'm Zach.
I'm not a very good typist. Not much of a speller, either. So I apologize for my future posts. :o
I've been on in-center hemodiaylsis for 24 years. I'm still learning things!
I think we can all learn something new each day ... and we can do it together on this great site.
I produce/direct documentaries for public tv. I spend too much of my time raising funds (no, I don't get not'n from those pleadge drives! >:D) But I love what I do!
More to come ... stay tuned!
Regards,
--Zach

Hello Zach,
Welcome to the site, don't worry about the spelling all I ask is we all try our best. When you say 24 years do you mean straight or have you had a transplant some of those years? How did you hear about our site by the way? But again welcome and I'm glad to see we have another veteran on our site. Also check out http://www.dialysischat.com for some fun things to do. Or check out what I am going through right now with NxStage, check out our other sister site http://www.ilovenxstage.com

We are very glad to have you with us, Zach. Nice picture. You obviously have a great deal to share with us. That is what this is for. Helping each other through this challenge. Looking forward to 'seeing' and 'hearing' more from you.
Welcome, Zach!

:o :o 24 years :o :o Wow!
Welcome, glad to have you here.
-
Hi Epoman,
Congrats one the first anniversary of the site!
BTW, I really appreciate the spell check you have here ;)
I read about this site from Nephrology News and Issues. Thought I'd drop in and say hello.
It's been 24 years without any "transplant break." I just don't want to be carved up like a turkey dinner. :o
-
Hey, thanks for the warm welcome everyone!!
-
And thanks bajanne2000, for correcting my spelling. ;D
I knew I'd mess it up!

bajanne2000,
It shows I edited most of the posts in the posts above, I removed Spelling error in topic title corrected - Bajanne2000\Moderator you only need to add that in the FIRST post of the thread. ;)

You're welcome. We are in this together. And anyway, I am a High School English teacher - just can't see an error and leave. However, I would not change any errors in your post. You have to do that yourself, by using the spellcheck and re-reading.
However, I would hate to have you not post because you are scared of errors. Please don't do that. You are such a marvellous person to me, you don't even know. Whenever I have contact with someone who has been on haemodialysis for more than 15 years, I am thrilled. You are my role model. I haven't even gone 15 months yet, so you are giving me HOPE that I can see my grandson (3 years old) grow up!
-
We all need hope and high expectations. Not just from ourselves and our families, but from those at the dialysis centers.
Some folks need to understand we are going to be here for more than just a couple of years!

I'm back from a quick dinner break:
Chicken Breast--1/2--3 oz (86g) Kcal:142 Protein:27 Phosphorus:196 Potassium:220
Couscous--1/2 Cup cooked Kcal:115 Protein:4 Phosphorus:20 Potassium: 45
1/2 Cup of seltzer to drink.
I'm trying to reach my daily protein goal of 90 grams (I'm about 77 kgs).
Just thought I'd share that with you. :)

:o :o :o Woah if you eat that like, no wonder you are still here after 24 years. I'm doomed. :-[

I try.
But sometimes I grab the feta cheese instead of the couscous, and there goes the bottle of renagel !

I'll be glad to share some of my meal ideas ... they're not recipes, just the content (meat, fish, poultry, broccoli, etc.), the amount and the values.
-
That would be just great. Sometimes that is what is needed - some good ideas. Go to the Diet and Recipe section and share them with us, please. Pretty please!

That was my first stop. :)

GEEZ "finally" I get my chance to say "hello" and welcome to our site. You look young! When did you start dialysis. Hey, there is a thread in General Discussion called "How Did Your Learn That Your Kidneys Were Failing". I'd like to hear your story.
http://ihatedialysis.com/forum/index.php?topic=1016.0
Oh, and I'm Quoted in the Magazine..... AHhhmmmm 8)
I have a friend who started dialysis the same time I did in 1987. She never wanted a transplant either. She is doing fine. We had a wager going on who would live the longest, me with a transplant or her on dialysis. She won, except I decided to go back on dialysis. :(
-
Welcome Zach! You clearly have a lot to share. It's good to know that the site seems to have lightened up on spelling so I hope you will be comfortable posting. I think you will find there are lots of good resources on line, here and elsewhere!

Welcome Zack! If you don't mind my asking, can you post some couscous recipes (in the recipes thread) as I have never tried that but would be interested.

Will do! Although my recipes may be a bit bland for most folks. :)
I've already made a few comments in the Diet and Recipes Discussion: in the Phosphates folder, and I started a new subject folder about complete meals with the nutrition information on calories, protein, phosphorus, and potassium. I hope everyone joins in!

Hi Zach,
Wish it was only a Dream ;) Welcome to the site.
Been back on dialysis for over 18 years now. Had a Transplant which hung on for nearly 7 years. Started dialysis at the age of ten in 1977. had Transplant 81.
I did used to split food into their different components. But decided after a while, could not be bothered. I see you try to have 90grammes of protein a day. I am suppose to be on a 70 gramme protein diet. But that went out of the window years ago. After a while you know what you can eat, or in most cases can not eat :-\
Yours
Kevno

Welcome :)

Oh I forgot ... in 1989, serving as reporter, I teamed up with award-winning director Ilan Ziv (Consuming Hunger; People Power) and Icarus/Tamouz Media for a investigative health documentary about the international trade in human organs. The program was produced in association with the BBC (for their program Antenna), RTL+, VARA and the Canadian Broadcasting Company.
I had a great time, traveling to London, Paris, Frankfurt, Innsbruck, Manila, and Guangdong, and Hong Kong (loved it in Hong Kong ... stayed an extra two weeks!).

You lucky dog you. :P ;D Other then going to Canada ( several times ) I have never been anywhere outside of the US. Let alone, been any farther west then Indiana. I have been up and down the east coast though, even been to Key West Florida. ;D

I've never been to Key West. :-[

Well, if there is ever a chance in you life that you find the opportunity to go there, you may want to check it out. I think it's a very beautiful place to visit.

Ah yes, and so it is that we endeavor to live the dream.
Some have 'passed on' to experience a new dream.
Some are still with us.
May the good dream linger awhile.
May we dialysis folks, one day, have the opportunity to share our dialysis experience's.
------------------------------------------
“Row, row, row your boat,
Gently down the stream.
Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily,
Life is but a dream.”
Duh. I love the meaning behind this nursery rhyme.
It’s a metaphor for life. We all agree on that. But there are multiple theories on how to break it down, what each object and line mean.
