Title: Here for my dad, 5 years on PD
Post by: KimT on October 06, 2008, 02:37:37 PM
This looks like a great site.  I am hopeful that I can get some direction and information to help my dad.  He has been on PD for a little over 5 years.  He uses a Fresenius machine and they switched machines in June.  He had 5 years of no infection and did reasonably well (aside from the common challenges, low protein, little appetite, weight loss, etc).  He has had 4 peritonitis bouts since June, and is now into his 5th.  We do not know if it is the system/tubing, his technique or what?

The new system stinks as far as he is concerned.  He has trouble filling sometimes (just  does not fill) and he has to start all over with new bags (and then it goes), it drains very slow and the pumps are noisy and slow.  Breaking down the drain bags and emptying them seems much more cumbersome than the last system (at least for a 74 year old man).  Is there anyone out there that has experienced any of this?  Any ideas on what to do?  Are there better systems?

He is 74, has a decent attitude but is tired of being sick as any of us would feel.  He is so close to getting a kidney and insists he still wants to go for a transplant if one comes.  I worry  that if we do not get this figured out, he will not be considered a candidate because of the infection.

Anyone?

 :welcomesign;  Kim and thank you for being such a caring advocate for your Dad.  I'm on hemo myself so can't answer your questions about PD but I feel certain that others here will jump in soon with ideas and suggestions.  You've found the best place for support and information in equal measure and I hope you'll post often.

:welcomesign; KimT. My hubby did home-hemo so I don't know what help I can be. Can you ask for the old machine back? Bless your heart for being a caregiver. Hope you can get some answers and your Dad can start doing better.  :cuddle; We are a great group.  :waving;

Welcome to IHD. The best way to do a search is from the home page, otherwise you only search a section.   :welcomesign;

Welcome.  I've also been on PD for 5 years, but I use a Baxter machine.  Hope you find your answers here.

Welcome to our community, Kim!  So glad your care for your dad brought you here.  I am sorry to hear the trouble you had since the machine switch.  What are the authorities doing about it?  Keep plugging for them to do something.  Please keep us informed on how things are going with him.  We're family here.  :grouphug;
