Title: May not be able to do PD may have to do HEMO
Post by: willcon on September 17, 2008, 12:41:01 PM
I had my PD cath put in a few weeks ago and have had notihing but pain, it appears that the only good position for the cath is not a comfortable one for me.  Went back a week later and the doctor repositioned the cath, but it has not helped with the pain.  We had a convertsation yesterday with the doctors and they feel that if we change the cath postion anymore ,then it just would not be in a position to do a good job.

Not the best news, but at least I have an alternative.

Is the catheter in your belly?  Maybe a presternal catheter might work better for you.  Mine is just to the right of my left breast.  Never had a bit of trouble with it.

I've not heard of a presternal catheter, but I am now doing research on it, and will for sure talk to my doctors about it. Funny my doctors did not mention it.

Willcon, for me it all came about when the surgeon drew pretty diagrams on my chest and tummy, then sat me up, and all the diagrams on my tummy disappeared!  He then suggested the presternal catheter, and I was so eager to do PD that I didn't give it a second thought.  Sadly, many nephs don't mention PD because they have vested interests in hemo centers.  It's all about the bucks for them.

Willcon I'm so sorry your PD catheter hasn't worked properly. I was wondering how you were doing as we hadn't heard from you for some time. Your not on your own with this problem, many on this forum have been unsuccessful with the PD alternative and they know how you feel. Maybe a presternal cath will work better. Take Care

Many nephs no connected with centers prefer Hemo becasue the mortality rate is so much lower.  Willcon, I would encourage you to look at daily home hemo.
